I have been using a highly customized norinco sks for close quarter blacktail deer hunting with great results but have passed on animals that were generally beyond 75 yards. I am intimately familiar with the cartridges ballistic capabilities but within 75 yards is my personal choice. I am getting a norinco m305 and am thinkin that this could replace the sks for my semi auto hunting needs, as the 308 has a wide range of loads and is generally great on deer at much longer ranges than what the sks is limited too. I believe the m305's are plenty accurate enough for hunting so.....
Has anyone here used the m305's for hunting and I'd be interested to hear about which animals you targetted and accuracy/performance in general.
I realize that many of you have tricked out your m305's , interested to hear from you guys and from anyone who has hunted with this rifle in "out of the box" condition
thx

it's a 308- nuff said- a little heavy to tote for hunting, and keep to 168s and lighter and you'll be fine- lots of folks prefer the 308-180s for hunting, but the 165s will do just fine if you do your job

thanx
for blacktail i hike into my hunting areas and then i sit in certain spots so I won't really be luggin it around on foot much. I guess from the sounds of it, maybe it's a no brainer, like you said... it's a 308 hehe.

I got a black bear with mine last spring. I used 168gr Winchester Supreme Slivertips. Worked well.

I thought I was the only one who hunts with an SKS here. :) But, 45ACPKING, I think you're a little too conservative on the range of SKS. You can shoot up to 200 yards to kill a deer for sure, but only if you can hit the target at that distance. I've been practicing at 200m with open sight all the time. :p

I shot a Whitetail doe two years ago with my M305. Handloads were 150 grain Hornady SST bullets and IMR 3031 powder (if I remember correctly) with a CCI mag primer. CCI primers are harder and help avoid the slam fire that can occur with the semi auto rifles...

Range... 125 yards or so, BANG, FLOP...

I then sold the rifle... Regretted it every day since and just two weeks ago, I bought another one... It's NOT for sale...

Cheers
Jay

I know very well what the sks is capable of but with it's bullet characteristics, too much can go wrong beyond a hundred yards, where i am hunting anyways. I have planted to the ground every big game animal I have ever shot regardless of rifle used, Never had to chase a wounded animal and will do everything in my power to keep it that way. I'm not saying you are wrong, it's just my personal choice to limit my sks hunting range to under 100 yards. Those of you who can achieve clean kills at further ranges with an sks , that is your choice and there is nothing wrong with that either.

hehehe this is turnin into an sks thread LOL, but that's okay
I use factory only but may do some reloading down the road. Remington 7.62 x 39 125 gr PTD, SP. It groups very well at 100 in my hunting sks. I have another that I have used and will be giving my son and it groups better with Federal 123 gr hi shock SP.

45ACPKING,

I agree that under or around 100m I'd be more confident to make a head shot, but knowing where your bullet would go at 200m is good for any follow up shots or shooting a broadside one.

HPL, there isn't very many options for this calibre in the market. I think I used 123/124 gr sp.

I've shot a couple deer and a moose with mine used 165grn sierra game kings.all were one shot kills.I like the m14 as it has a lefty friendly safety and is reliable. She is a bit heavy to carry around but its not a jamamatic and its not a BAR so a few scratches and dings won't bring a tear to my eye.

i wonder if the m14 can be skeletonized a little to effectively shave some metal from the rifle to lighten it a little. I've had this done on my sks with o.k. results

shot a deer this year - well last one- 2005 . with my M305.
150 SST factory load from Hornady.
Died instantly. Small entry - small exit. All in between -mushy.
used iron sights - range roughly 100 m.

AK-SKS are good for up to 300 yds for deer. I'd stay in 150 - 170 with irons.
the caliber being as cheap as it is to feed .... there's really no excuse for not practising. I've seen some amazing shots made with the 7.62x39.
Upgrading to 7.62x51 can only mean an improvement.

i have a busnell elite 3200 on my sks :D , mounted on a custom made, 1 of a kind picatinny rail mount that is attached via drilling and tapping the receiver, I could easily , and am able to take shots at 300 yards with the sks but really i'd rather do it with a m305 :D
I get the impression here that the m305 will perform as any other 308 calibre rifle as far as killing power, guess that's a no brainer. I'm gonna trick one up for this falls hunting season, will post pics when she is all done.

don't know if i'd want to get it skeletonized- you won't save that much and maybe give up strength where it's needed- it's fine right out of the box- the real change in performance is when you change that mystery wood stock out for a usgi fiberglas- the 305 already has a mounting hole for a scope mount- see the stickies in the beginning of this section

M305 is heavy - specially with the whole claning kit/oiler in the butt (no pun intended)
Some shorte the bbl, mount a rubber pad..... I just like it the way it is.
Can't use tape on the muzzle though. Ballons are the way to go. Or.....;)

I have carried my M305 hunting for whitetail. It's actually not that heavy (maybe I'm used to it). With a nice sling, it's perfect.

I shot bush ranger in 7.62x39, either in Ruger or in Nork. Just didn't like the feeling of handling them, just didn't feel right.

Hey...

I took a buck with my out-of-the-box-for-2-days Norc M14s year before last. Approx. 120yard shot with factory battlesight - 150gr Remington bullet placed exactly where I aimed. Second shot not needed. VERY pleased. It now has a black USGI fibreglass stock, Basset Machine scope mount and 4x scope. I don't mind the weight..that's what a sling is for.
