M14 for hunting, any thoughts on this

I shot many , many earthpigs with real USGI M14's back in 1989 and 1990 up here in the Collingwood, ONT area. Does that count ? LOL

I've used the 125 gr. PSP bulk bullet from Remington (Wholesale Sports 500 for $ 60) along with 43.0 gr. W748 Winchester ball powder. Cannot recall the name of the primers used.

Launches the earthpigs right outta their holes. I was using iron sights , too ! Yeeeeha !

There are many CGN members here who have used their '14's for hunting purposes !

it's a 308- nuff said- a little heavy to tote for hunting, and keep to 168s and lighter and you'll be fine- lots of folks prefer the 308-180s for hunting, but the 165s will do just fine if you do your job
Sissy :p:D
the M-305 is great for anything up to 250 yards bear, deer, moose wont know the diffrence :D

M-305 for hunting

I used my M-305 for moose last season and i'm still eating steaks.I used winchester 308 180gr psp and never had any problems, accuracy is great as long as i do my part LOL.The range was 165yrds and she went less than 20yrds after being hit,the one thing i did notice was it was hard to see the front sight against the dark brown moose fur.I'll know better next year and put a little white paint on my new springfield M1a front sight for contrast.

May I recommend change the stock to synthetic if you decide to go the M305 route.......much lighter/less bulkier than the original chi wood......balance is great......just right even if you are planning on using irons only.

There isn't much that I can add that you guys haven't already said. Balance with the M14 is awesome with the USGI synth.

I'm in the process of collecting the parts to build an M305 Scout that I intend on using when I'm dogging. I'm hoping that the shorter length will cut a couple of pounds off. It is a heavy gun but, like one of the other guys said, it isn't pretty like the BAR so it's okay to get the odd scratch. I already have a full size with a Skullboy stock, Burris Full-field II on an ARMS #18 and the parts I've listed below in it and I love it! Very accurate but the only draw backs for hunting were length and I'm not a big scope fan for dogging.

I'm just waiting on Marstar's next batch and then the fun begins.

My new one is going to get cut to 18.5" barrel length, Springfield Scout Mount with Eotech 552, Dave GP synthetic Pistol Grip Stock or one of my synthetics with the Rooster Cheekpiece. Rooster Tac latch, Rooster Spring guide, Garand Rear sight.

I just can't decide on Vortex flash hider, Phantom Flashhider/comp or the Smith Enterprises compensator. I also can't figure out which sling yet. Any experiences or your thoughts would be welcome, guys!

(Note: okay, yes, it's all Tac stuff on it...I'm a tac instructor so I like to keep my guns set up for stuff that I can show prospective clients etc what they can use. Mind you, I haven't seen any Canadian plice clients with M14's. I have used alot of the Tac stuff operationally and if it works there, it's gotta be good for hunting.... )

Oh, I also need to point out that guys like Skullboy, Hungry, Starlight, Shazam, Popurrhedoff, Turf and Reaper are awesome sources of knowledge for all things M14 and in alot of cases, equipment that is TAC-oriented!:)

I haven't used a TASER on deer yet though...hmmm...just kidding.) :D

How do you handcuff a deer anyway and which official language do you read their rights to counsel in?  :D
