M14 Front grip (yes or no)

Hey I just bought a new Norinco M14 from www.theammosource.com

What do you guys say about mounting a front grip on it? yes/no?
Also, if anyone has some good photos I'd appreciate you posting them.

to me it's a "better have one and not need it than need one and not have" type of thing

I have M14's in a JAE and a Troy stock and both are around the 15lbs mark. Am using a Bi-pod for both of these. Factory stock or a USGI stock will be lighter and doubt a front grip will be needed. The Sage and AKM are front heavy a grip would be handy. Im old and these eye arent what they used to be, i shoot of the bag or bi-pod :)
 
Up to the individual. I won't do it, not even once I get a AR15. Tried it once, didn't feel comfortable. I found it got in the way more than being usefull.

You will get used to the M14. Starting to myself. One way to hold it more secure and steady is to hold it by the mag (20rd) with your elbow into your gut. Oh, but that's just me since it have a well padded gut to rest on:D

You can also use the sling, around your right elbow, or alternately around your left elbow, though that makes it tough to change mags.
 
it's a magpul RVG grip, one of the cheapest around...
I know we have a Canadian magpul dealer on this board but his price (39$+taxes+10$ shipping) makes absolutely no sense to me when I could be buying the very same item from Brownells (at regular, not dealer, pricing of 19,99+shipping) sell it cheaper than said dealer and STILL be able to make profit... So yeah, I got it from brownells.com
The rail is a special order I placed at Fabsport, it's a Yankee Hill part YHM-9465-6.

So all in all it was for me a 60$ upgrade including taxes and shipping, but I do not recommend doing it if you are not good with tools or new to the m14... The rail is installed with 3 machine screws and 3 matching nuts (not provided). I had to drill holes where I would have enough clearance to fit the nuts and clear the op-rod, I then cut the screws short enough to also clear the op-rod.

Im getting a rail from DLASK Arms and will mount a tango down bipod and short vertical grip.
As i will mount an aimpoint on a forward hanguard rail the SVG will be usefull for balance IMHO

Damn! Well it looks like I am going to be spending some more money pretty soon. Also, and forgive me for I'm a fairly new gun owner, what would be the advantage of a scout setup? I've seen a few rifles like it and am curious.
 
I use the scout setup because it keeps the scope closer to the bore. You still need a cheek riser but I find the traditional scope mount impossibly high for comfort.
I also use the 5 round mags, it seems best to grip the rifle half on the mag well or just ahead of it. A forward grip would be too far forward for me.

I modded the 5 round mags to get them out easier. Get some 1" plastic cable rings. They sort of look like a "P" with a short stem. Use a short 3/16 rivet through the existing hole in the bottom of the mag. Stick your finger through the hole and your thumb falls naturally on the mag release with either hand.
The one in the pic is a 3/4" cable ring - a tad too small. I overcompensated with the 10/22 mag and glued a 1 1/2" ring on. One inch would be perfect.
