Guess?
I know there is a special tool out there to remove those c-clips that hold the hand guard on the M14, but is there a DIY tool I can use?

Do you want to remove the handguard or the retaining clip? If its just the hand guard, you can slide it off to the front. You need to remove the gas plug and unscrew the gas lock ring and slide the gas assembly forward. You can then slide the handguard off and on without fooling around with spreading the clip.

If you want to remove the clip from the removed handguard, you can use a large set of external circlip pliers. Princess Auto has them. You might also have some success with tying some fishing line through the holes and onto a couple of piece of dowel and pulling to spread them. Warning, its easy to chip the hard plastic handguard.

Far easier:

Pull the barreled action out of the stock

sit it in your lap handguard down, flash hider to the left

Push on the outside (furthest from you) side of the rear clip. It will pop off. Push it a little further, and the side closest to you will pop off as well.

This is the easiest way to do it and you won't crack or scuff anything, and no tools are required.
