Why are FS welded on the barrel of an norinco m14 by the company? (safety)? Once the FS removed by drilling the welds out can it be but back on and be safe?
thanks........

The flashiders were tack welded to comply with US law, back in the days when the rifles were being made for sale in the US. That is why the receivers often have US importer's marks on them. If you can get the flashider off, and if it is still in usable condition, there is no reaso nit could not be reinstalled. Sometimes drilling is not necessary. You might get lucky.

what was the reason why the US wanted them welded? What is the advantage or security it brought?

The assault weapons bill listed all the nasty features that made a gun banned. Flash hiders were verboten but muzzle brakes okay. In order to be able to import it to the US, it had to be permanently attached.

and the bayonet lug removed.

Right, forgot to mention that. BTW, that's one of the reasons I haven't bought a Norinco M14, seeing that missing bayo lug bugs me...and it's not so easy to fix either, what with the welded on hider and the original M14 hiders non exportable and now rare and costly. (I also hate seeing Made in China on anything:mad:)

The Chinese finally came up with a fix that the U.S. couldn'd figure out. One of the problems of the M-14 design was that stupid flash hider kept shooting loose, so, weld it!

Hmmm...they came loose? That'd make it a bit hard to service though, wouldn't it? Can't remove the gas cylinder...

Under normal "Service Conditions" regular troopies would never remove the flash hider or the cylinder from the barrel, thats 1st line maint. The more you remove these parts from the barrel the more induced wear and therefore less accuracy. Some match rifle barrels come with the gas block as part of the assembly, not to be removed! Do you remove your AR-15 gas block every time you clean your AR-15? An M-14 should only have the gas plug and pistol removed for cleaning, not the block removed.
