I've just treated my m305 to a very nice second hand boyds stock, which came complete with all the metal bits as it was on a Springfield M1a. I can't believe how having a real stock on my rifle has totally transformed it, I can wait to shoot it! But now I'm looking at the norc handguard, and I'm wondering is it worth it to replace that as well? Are Usgi m-14 handguard stiffer/stronger? Thanks, John.

Given the quality of the wood grain I'd say it was a Minelli S.P.A. handguard - the best modern M14 wood stock available.

Dunno. Brownells doesn't specify who the supplier is/was.

Just a note if you have a mid weight NM barrel the wooden handguard won't fit.
You will need to spend many hours thinning the backside and hoping it doesn't affect accuracy.

I just ordered one from Boyd's with the stock because I wasn't sure if I wanted that or the guard from the USGI kit. Cheaper you order them together for the shipping.

Norc Hand guards are NOT the same as USGI there is a definite difference. USGI are made of fiberglass and are much stronger. Norc's are plastic and in general are rubbish. just my $0.02

The Nork hand guards I've seen were all some sort of fiberous material that is much stiffer than USGI.

USGI, are fiberglass, and thicker, but every one I've seen has been "less stiff" than chi-com while being about 15% thicker.

SAI hand guards are plastic, very flexible and seem to be made out of the same stuff as rubbermade storage totes.

I have never seen a plastic Chinese hand guard.

I prefer the chi-com handguards over USGI.

Interesting. It's definitely not Minelli S.P.A. Very nice piece of walnut.

Agreed. They're much more durable, fit just as well or better, and look terrific.

After many years of tightening rattling and shaky (accuracy robbing) USGI handguards, I actually like the Norinco black plastic PCB laden handguard. It's tight and snug.... what's not to like?

Yeah, I've got a whole handful of USGI units here, I actually give them away at my clinics. Jokes aside, I have come to like the vented handguards from the sixties since they are pretty tight on my Criterion barreled 2007 Norinco USGI build. :p

Buy what works for you and your game/ cool factor/ ego/ budget/ fondle factor (watching Band of Brothers boxed set)/ competition/ setup/ modularity and all that fun. In the end; just enjoy your pastime....

Cheers,
