This might sound blasfamous to some of you guys. But im in the process of "sporterizing" my nork im not doing any irreverseable work to the core of the guts.My goal is to shed some weight and would appreciate any input.
so far i have
-replaced the chinnese stinkwood with a usgi fiberglass stock
-replaced the butplate with rubber
-made my own sling swivels to fit the uncle mikes stuff
-purchased a ncstar scope mount that is identical to the springfield i have on it now and am planning to cut some weight off of it once i decide what scope will be on it permanently (right now it has my load development scope on it an old 20x redfield so i dont have to shlep my spotting scope around)

what are you going to use for a scope mount?

I took my M1A out hunting this last season, I thought it was a bit to heavy to be lugging through Vancouver Islands slash. I look forward to seeing your end result.

If you intend to carry it in the bush, consider a tactical sling that allow carry out front. I have a Safari Sling I use on mine, and it keeps the rifle against my chest, muzzle down, and both hands free to part branches or climb. When I want to fire, I just sweep one arm under the sling and it goes right to the shoulder. Makes carrying an M14 effortless as it can be.

im going to use the ncstar mount and cut chunks off it with a milling machine
the mount only cost 40$ and is the same as the springfield i gave my left kidney for im also replacing the big ugly knobs with just a nut that will probably take 4 or 5 ounces off right away. But thats going to wait untill after I make my scope decission so I can put it on the springfeild mount and see what I can chop away on the other

you can't take off enough weight in order to make a difference, like he said get a good sling and your good to go. more weight=less recoil & better target aquisition

so your using a NC star side mount scope base? I ran my m14 bone stock last moose/deer seson. It was heavy, came in around 8lbs, or more. now that shes in a doc' stock, scoped, its 12 lbs.....the wood is lighter

I agree, I have been using the safari slings now for about 25 years and the past 15 years on M14’s. Always in front in the ready position and the perfect compliment for a scoped M14 in a GI stock. Great while snowmobling too because when carried in front snow doesn’t get into the action.

i think everything you have done adds weight to the m14,

I agree, i went and put a mount i got from fabsports, bipod and and a scope, and it weighs a ton now, and doesn't shoot nearly as good as irons, its just to hard to scope this rifle on a budget, you will end up spending 100's.

Irons for me.

in nam we used to sling the 14 with a sling off an m60 - not the thin one, the big fat nylon one with the 2.5 inch neckpiece- hangs just like one too, if it's strung correctly- that way it allows both hip and shoulder fire and slides up to the shoulder by rotating the sling- the only modern addition i would add is a couple of HEAVY DUTY zip ties so the sling travels easier

the original stock with butplate and sling weighs 3lb 10oz the new one weighs 3lb even.Useing a digital fish scale.I think the butplate is the biggest saving. The springfield mount works good I cant see any problems scopeing this beast.I think the forward carry is something I will try as the bigger mag can get caught up in bulky cloths .Getting rid of the knobs on the mount is one thing I will do for the same reason.Ive been using this machine for winter coyotes with the big mags its easy to operate with big gloves on.

I have a Springfield on it now that cost me about 150$ I also have a ncstar in a box if you are thinking of scopeing your m14 save the money and buy the ncstar they are identical exept the ncstar is using a metric thread on the gizmo that replaces the stripper clip guide

not to worryed about it if the ncstar dont work i put the sa back on the ncstar cost is less than 2 pizzas .Is the m14 that hard to scope? The recoil is light its only a 308.Gass operated to boot.just checked the ncstar its aluminum maybe I dont have to cut chunks out of it to lighten thanks matt
ps.so is the sa mount never realized this

I've heard story's about lower priced mounts getting loose. Its not the recoil, is the bolt slaming into the reciever during its cycle. hope she holds up for ya. Maybe m14 doc or hungry will chime in and give an opinion.

The mount i have starts to come loose after a few rounds, no matter how much i tighten it, i suppose if i use loctite it might hold, mine is aluminum not steel
