M14 INDEXING bluuuuuuues ...

We've seen some pictures on here of front sights that are sloped in the way the base is machined. I've seen one's that the pedals of the sight protectors are non-symetrical and lean. Can really be distracting if you let it.

Laz, Craftsman_441 has a really good simple trick that is a pretty good indication of whether the barrel is properly indexed:

Look at the chamber cuts. If the scalloping shows it centered, the middle notch would line up with slot for the oprod spring guide.

This serves as another additional check in case the flash suppressor splines or the front sight are incorrect.

Winz,
I have a tool all drawn out and ready to go that will provide a straight edge surface that indexes off of the barrel slot at the gas assembly. that way it can be used with bothj shortified and long barrels. This tool is to replace the over 60 yr old, once lasered, Mark 1, eyeballs I am now using to index barrels. that M1E is pretty well useless these days unless it is a very bright room.

PS: the chamber scallops are OK for a rough index, but for perfection we need a better tool.

Anybody want to buy such a tool if |I make more than one??

Name me your price point....I'm usually ok with dumping money into M14 goodies (just as Hungry!)

Yes, indeed, the chamber scallops are only as a rough index. I regard this as an additional check measure when first inspecting a new out of the box M14. Like you said, eyeballing off the sight isn't always possible, easy nor in the above example, accurate.

good thread Laz. the tool sounds like a dandy idea.
ours is now rigged with a lazer , mounted to the top of a usgi flashhider.... permanently. 1/16 hole top dead center of vice and wrench and ya just can't miss getting her bang on. to this day i haven't met a norc flash hider that would pass north american QC machining standards ... except on a couple aearly bayolugged poly's i've handled.

LAZ, the proposed tool sounds like a winner - am sure you will have us all begging for proper indexing tuneup, should you have the time and be so inclined. On a related subject, the flash hider/front sight on my fresh out of box 2007 Norico 14 is obviously not welded - it is significantly loose. It wobbles side to side several degrees, entire apparatus easy to manipulate with thumb and forefinger. Hoping this is an easy fix by tightening lock nut/washer, but before I attempt as a newbie, has anyone else seen this issue? Thanks.
