I was just wondering if anybody has ever noticed an extreme loss of accuracy after switching a m14 from the chu wood to a gi stock. When this rifle was in the original chu wood stock it would shoot moa to slightly sub moa. this rifle no longer shoots groups it shoots patterns. It has a match spring guide, the op rod guide has been staked properly, the barrel is properly indexed, it has a troy brake on it.
I noticed the handguard is touching the stock on one side so I am planning on filling a little bit off to give a clearance. I havnt unitized the gas system yet but that is also in the plans this week. I also noticed there is a slight bit of play between the gas cylinder and the splines on the barrel. Would it be smart to peen those splines to give an interference fit like a garand?

Take a look at some of the stock fitting threads for the promag stocks .
One side of the nork receiver has a bevel on it that needs to be fitted to gi stocks.
I would not do any file work until you get it fitted.
Have you done the safety test ?

Gas cylinder splines with some slop ? By all means, peen the splines like one does with an M1 Garand. I do this all the time when building match rifles for people! :D

cheers,
Barney

I've seen this lots ;)
Take your trigger group out and hinge the action upand then down again. Watch and feel for any side to side play as the receiver lugs slide in.
Also, the fiberglass stocks have a lot more forestock flex than a wood stock.
2 things you might want to do.
1) Lightly bed the action with epoxy putty to tighten up the walls of the inletting. Degrease and sand with 80 grit first. Lightly grease receiver or use a mold release agent. Marine epoxies are best.

2) Do a full bedding job.

Peening gas cylinder and flash hider splines to do away with rotation for sure ;)

Hard to beat a nice tight fitting G.I. Stock, try a basic bedding job

Thats the weird thing is the stock fits like a glove it doesnt rock around at all, think im going to tighten up the gas system and put it back in the chu wood and shoot some paper to see where im at.
Thanks guys
