M14/m1a casm® "ex" scope mount

Some months ago I bought a Leatherwood (Hi Lux) scope for my Norc M305 and an Arms #18 mount. The base on the Leatherwood is quite long to accommodate the "camputer" and the ARMS was just not a long enough mount to allow me to properly mount the scope and allow adjustment for eye relief. I ordered a a M14/M1A CASM® "EX" from M14.ca late last Thursday and it arrived yesterday morning. Talk about fast service! Anyway, I mounted the scope using the M14/M1A CASM® "EX" and now have lots of room for adjusting eye relief. I bedded the Norc stock after filling in the hollow grip area to strengthen the stock, providing a firmer bedding base. I have yet to fire the rifle since making the changes but I have this perfect area in the mountains, southwest of where I. All I need is for the snow to go so I can get up there.

i been thinking on that scope for a loooong time. i would really like a know how they "really" work.
how the glass is compared to a leupold optic. (is vx-1,2 or 3 grade glass...)

It probably doesn't have the best optic on the market but then, I don't have the best eye sight. I figure the glass is pretty good and probably consistent with a $600. scope ($350. to $400 in the US) It is supposed to be a long range scope but I haven't been able to try it out over 50 yds yet. Once the snow is gone I hope to be able to zero it in at the recommended 300 yds. Then I would like to try it out at longer ranges to see how the built-in drop compensator does.

Here is another interesting footnote: the CASM "EX" scope mount's net weight to the M14 here is just 2.6 ounces after subtracting the weight for the M14 iron sights. The rail is 9.125" long. Great photos. I would like to read more about what you think about how the rifle balance has changed with the further rearward mounting of your optic. Did you notice an improvement here?

Seems better balanced. The scope itself is quite heavy so any movement to the rear improves balance.

Like I told Larry (Laz) at the gun show in chilliwack, it's too long for my needs. Your not able to a scope back far enough without the front bell hitting the mount. It needs to be cut right at the front pillar.

In the pictures it looks like the mount and front bell are touching when actually they aren't. Close, but not touching. The scope as it is, is set for me in the standing position. I have a feeling I will have to move it forward an inch or two for prone. I'll know better when I take it out to the bush. Come on snow, melt!

Well sir, if you look at the photo above, the Leatherwood M1200 with a 50mm bell clears the mount and the Quick Detach scope base is positioned farther back in the sight pocket. I'd say it's setup right. I will add that the CASM "EX" wasn't just made to offer slightly better balance scopeing the M14: it was designed as an ideal mount for a Aimpoint + Magnifier (or Eotech + Magnifier) setup if you are moving a set, for example, from your AR15 to your M14 (hence the additional 1.5" of rail space at the front). Short eye relief scopes like ACOGs will also be advantaged sitting further back in the rear sight pocket: better balance, better eye relief.

Hey Frank

That is was Larry had said as well about what your inspiration was for it and it does make a great mount for the combo (Eotech + Magnifier). Yes you are correct as it does clear it but you will also notice that it could come back a lot more if that mount was shorted. That set up won't as the rings/mount is very long and won't let the scope go further back and the mount is almost all the way back but with my set up I would be able to bring the scope back another 2 inch if that mount of yours didn't have that piece out front. I'm only suggesting that making two styles of it (one being the long version (present offering, and one being a short (cutting off the front 1.5 inches) would only open up another market to you. Personally I would like to see one with that front bit gone and no cut out down the centre. I use LaRue rings and need almost solid rails for a positive lock. It took me a while to warm up to your mounts Frank but this one might fit my bill. You are correct that it does work, for him. That set up would never work for me as I like my scope as far back as it will go.

Looks good! Finally some lenght on that rail which is why I haven't bought one previously. Tell me Frank, is the hand guard hard to remove now with that extra rail over hanging it?
