Hi everyone I just got a Springfield M1A. And I want to get some go/no go gauges to check the headspace but am a bit confused and what to get

Do I need .308 set or a 7.62x51 NATO set. And I hear things that you have to use gauges that have the extractor slot cut in them

Please any help would be great. Also where can I get them. Brownells only has the .308 win set with no extractor slot cut.

Thanks

You probably don't need headspace gauges. It doesn't hurt to check your headspace though. If I were you I would buy the 7.62 NATO gauges and the M14 bolt disassembly tool from Brownells. To check the headspace you will need to remove your extractor if the gauges you are using don't have a slot cut. You will likely end up snapping the rim off of a gauge that doesn't have a slot cut for the extractor when you try to chamber the gauge.

Hope this helps.

it helps very much thank you. Do the gauges come pre cut or do i have to cut the slot myself?

The gauges I bought did not have a slot cut in them. You will either need a bolt disassembly tool or a .30-06 case to remove the extractor. I'm sure if you use the search function on this forum you will figure out how to remove the extractor with a .30-06 case. If you don't figure it out here you will most likely find it if you look on google.

Thanks again. If the headspace is good with the 7.62 NATO gauges is it safe to shoot .308 win out of the springfield M1A. There seems to be some debate on that.

And 7.62x51 NATO surplus is pretty hard to come by these days. But .308 is easier to get
