M14/M1a vs FN FAL

Did a bit of searching on here and on the rumornet and have not really got a close definitive opinion / explanation on how these rifles differ except the fact that the FAL came with an adjustable gas system .

was wondering if maybe some of the gun nuts who owned and shot their FALS could tell us younger guys if we are really missing anything by not being able to own one , what you liked or disliked between the 2 rifles or what common ground the 2 rifles have in respect to their own designs .
Simply the ###iest beast you ever will fire, never failed me ever!!!I slept with it ,gave it an pet name, polished it and kept her clean.3 inch group at 300 yards, and what you hit never got up again.and the sound, that distintive sound of her pukin rounds down range...oh to be 17 again and in the army....cause thats the only place you could fire one....oh,and the squad atomatic on full auto gave me a hard on every time

from a field soldiers stand point, i think the fn is all around a better battle rifle. easier and faster to strip and clean, accurate, tough one piece construction (so to speak) the upper is pivoted with the lower but there is no stock. the upper has hand gaurds the lower has a but and pistol grip. m14 i can only speak of from firing the springfield m1a and norc. i like the rifle but although relativly easy to strip it still is harder then the fn not to mention the trigger mec. one piece design basicaly the lower is the stock and the upper is the rifle. probably why the yanks looked at the fn befor they went to the armalite design.

I guess if you're a collector, you should have one of each. :D Totally different concept between the FAL and the M 14. The FAL was originally designed to fire a reduced power cartridge, based on the German 7.92x33, in the fully automatic mode. Then the Nato boys came along and tried to make it into a full powered weapon, while keeping the full auto function. Didn't work, so most were restricted to semi only. I've always regarded it as the clumsiest combat weapon ever made.:D Accuracy? Sniper versions of the FAL are conspicuous by their scarcity. The M14, on the other hand , is an updated version of the Garand and has all the user friendly functions of that rifle. You like the Garand, you'll love the M 14. M1A1 is just an M14 built to meet US legal requirements that mandate strict requirements around ownership of full auto capable weapons.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the best features of the FN, which is that the bolt carriers are interchangeable without needing to be fitted by an armourer and, in the C1A1 at least that the charging handle doubles as a beer opener!
Also, I'll never forget the joy some herbies experienced coming out of the head at Chiliwack and finding their trigger group dis-assembled on their rack!
Lastly, if you adjust the gas plug just right, when you fall in and order arms the gas piston assembly flies off across the parade square... . ah, the good old days.

METRIC FAL Para for the win ... Overall great options for a FAL...

The M14 M1A in a Sage EBR (or other) ... is just trying to catch up with the FAL!) LOL

DSA just keeps on making them better...

I had one back in the days before they were banned here in yUK. bought and paid for with my own money, even though I had access to one in the Army for comp shooting [personal weapon was a Sterling SMG/Inglis Browning SLP].

I loved the 'PLANGGGGGGGG' sound made by the action and the fact that it was pretty accurate, even with me shooting it.

I'd take one now like a shot, if I could.

C1A2 alot more fun... That was the first rifle I ever fired at 4 years old.. Full auto was allot of fun.. Nothing like a bunch of old guys at the range look at the little kid pound away at it. here try this tommy gun here try this uzi.. Never was allowed to shoot the uzi everyone said no.

At age 9 I did mange to own it for 2 hrs.. It was arranged by my parnets to be sent to a musiuem and my Grandfather made sure to tell me to refuse to sign once it was in my name as his last request. The 2 hrs were the RCMP trying to at first trick me into signing then say they will just take it away in 2 weeks when the FAC expires. I simply said I will renew it. When asked why I was doing this to them I said it was my Grandfathers last request. They ended up signing the page them self and just saying I signed it when I didn't so what they did was illegal but its my word agianst theres so good luck. The firearm has since been deactivated and put on display so there is no way i could get it back since the deed has been done already.
