Any idea how to set it up like this without going scout mode? I'm looking hard at the Comp ML2 2x.

in my humble opinion, if you are going to use an aimpoint, you want it forward of the receiver so you can use the stripper clip guide and don't have a scope mount on the rifle. I also prefer a red dot further away on a rail...

IIRC, that's the old style Smith(?) mount that had a front and rear pad, instead of a full rail.

Just use a cantilever Aimpoint mount off the front of a Smith/ARMS/etc mount.

IMHO, an Ultimak or other scout mount would be the way I'd go.

Steve,

If you use the cantilever mount, the reddot starts become increasing high on the rifle....

I agree...go with a scout mount of some manner....will save you pain.

The scope mount your thinking of is the old arms 18....uber rare ....

Right, mixed up the old ARMS with Smith.

This scout scope is on the SA scout mount and I wish it was lower. An Ultimak could bring it down probably 1/2". It's not quite "chin-weld" high, but it's definitely heads-up.

Morpheus & Stevo: My M1A reciever is slightly off in alignment, so I can't put a traditional Smith's or ARMS mount without tampering by a gunsmith, so that is why I was looking at another altenative i.e Stripper clip mount or even if I have to, the Scout mount way.

Does anyone know if that rifle in the movie is anything like what was used by SFC Randy Shughart? I read in a bunch of places that it was an m14, but have never heard specifics about the setup. Most of the m14s I have seen in pics of the time period were out of the box usgi. The setup in the movie always looks a little odd to me, but have never had the chance to try it.

funny. Never noticed till now, the image on bottom is reversed. OP Rod is on LHS. Must be the new Stag Arms M14 leftie model.

Do you figure think that'll hold zero? If I'm not mistaken, the mount from the photo is an old style ARMS 18 with cutouts, and he just attached sight to the front segment.

Been reading on the Ultimak website & it won't sit on my medium weight barrel..

The UltiMAK M8 mount fits only standard, GI spec barrels. In the current Springfield line-up, the compatible models are; M1A Standard, M1A Scout Squad, SOCOM 16, and SOCOM II. The "Loaded Standard" and all of their "Match" and "Tactical" models have heavier-than-standard barrels, which will not allow M8 mount installation.

You could get a SA scout mount and have it bored out to the correct diameter.

Tell you what I'll do, I'll trade you my SA scout mount for an Ultimak. Now how can you pass that up?;)
