M14 mags clean off??

what can I use to clean off the mags? Just water? They are packed in some sort of grease (cosmoline?)

Water alone won't get rid of grease. Best bet is to use some solvent, or simple green with HOT HOT HOT water and scrub them down. Make sure they are fully dried after the fact to prevent rust.

Brake disk cleaner. Varsol.

I used vinegar and it worked great..

vinegar and dish soap.

Super hot water and dish soap followed by some Hoppes worked well for me. Just make sure you get all the water out after you're done cleaning.

Another vote for brake cleaner. Maybe a touch of clp afterwards, with 99% of it then wiped off.

Mineral spirts will also do a good job or turpintine...

Did you guys actually disassemble the mags? I am afraid to bend the clip on the floor plate because I don't want to wreck it or mar it up..lol

"...actually disassemble the mags..." Yep. However, you can get away with just dropping them into a tin foil pan of Varsol. Varsol being a commercial brand name for mineral spirits. Any degreaser will do though. Varsol is just cheap and readily available in any Crappy Tire or paint shop.
