Can anyone tell me there experiences with M14 muzzle brakes. I would like to know which is better, the Springfield Armory version or the Smith Enterprises. I am having diffculty aquiring the Smith Enterprises brake and was hoping the S.A version is just as good. Your input would be great.

I ordered my Smith Enterprises flash supressor directly from them over their website. Showed up in a couple weeks. No problems at the border or anything.

flash suppressors do not require stated dept export permits.... MUZZLE BREAKS do require export permits.

I just got one of my barrels chopped. crowned and threaded to accept AR vortex (reamed to .308), the work was done by Dlask ..... he makes a real nice muzzle break as well, quite a few CGN'ers have those too.

I'm not an expert in export/import but one thing for sure, Smith Enterprises told me that they don't ship their muzzle brake to Canada and Brownells told me that they don't ship flash suppressor to Canada because it was an "SME item". They cancelled my last order of a Springfield M1A National Match flash suppressor...

I can't speak for Joe Dlask...... but I can tell you guys this..... HE WILL start making parts and accessories for the m14 rifles if guys show interest. Currently he is sold out of his m14s threaded muzzle breaks.... BUT, I understand that he will be doing another run shortly... and is working on other m14 related items.... here IN CANADA. email them and show him there is interest.

I ordered a muzzle break 2 weeks ago and I got it 3 days ago, no problem at all.
135$ everything included
Very nice and solid piece. Can't wait to try it.

???? I did exactly the same and they just refused to sell me, they said they can't ship to canada. WTH ?

I'm not an expert too, but I think that the flash suppresors are the ones that can't be shipped up here. I ordered a muzzle brake from Brownells not long ago and it went through like a knife in butter.

I have been after a SEI coast guard muzzle break for some time now. State department lists muzzle breaks as restricted items, "requiring" state dept approval for export. If you managed to circumvent this approval somehow..... the internet is the last place i'd be talking about it. ;)

maybe something stateside has changed..... dunno..... but i've lost valuable items that were "supposedly" o.k. to ship to canada and i don't take chances anymore. I have a cache of parts safely secured in the states and when i'm ready I'll get questar to bring it in all at once, I'll rest assured knowing there is nothing to chance, and no abscure laws to be broken. Dealers with ability to import the full range of tactical type accessories in Canada are letting this M14 craze slip through thier fingers and I am simply AMAZED that they didn't see this coming. The best thing you can do is pressure your favorite or local canadian dealer to investigate getting inventory of the items thier is obviously a huge demand for .... right now..... this craze will pass one day i'm sure but untill then.... $$$$ are like dust bunnies..... just laying around in the cracks and crannies.... just waiting to be swept in to a nice neat, big pile :D :D

Brake !

I have a dlask brake for my m 14 norc - it is FANTASTIC - recoil and muzzle jump GONE ! very effective - on a bipod all that happens is my 24 X leuopold 's crosshairs jump to the side ! I can hit the 200 yd gong 5 times in three and a half seconds ! Bug joe to start crankin em out again !

Brownells clearly wrote on the packaging slip that the brake was a state department regulated item. Anyway I don't think Brownells do things on the down low.

I dunno, but I only placed my order (directly from Smiths) about 3 months ago.
They sent it through with no extra paperwork req'd - I doubt they'd risk thier business over a $100 item
BTW, if you want a Canadian source, contact Rick at ATR - he had a few last time I was there.

I have one brake coming through questar right now, but if there is some available around my friend might need one. What's ATR ??

Oh I see he must be HWSNBN or whatever. I think i've found his website, after all the .50cal stuff I've seen that's gotta be him...

I just spent the afternoon at the range sighting in my SPARE 14 and my shorty. I like the shorties so much I've decided to chop the spare 14 into another shorty, and am seriously contemplating chopping my target rifle as well. [ The one in the pic at the top of the table, in the JAE stock with the Dlask FOUR port comp.].
http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=216116

So if I decide to chop the barrel on my "target" 14, there will be ONE and ONE ONLY Dlask four port comp up for grabs. This comp has been mounted, but never fired [ actually, the barrel is off right now as my target rifle receiver is being used as the plug for machining up the aluminum bedding surface for my new MUNI*MULA stock.]

NOTE: If you need a muzzle brake to fit an American made GENUINE M-14, or a Sproingfield M1A, then there are several American manufacturers who will make these items ... but may or may NOT ship them to Canuckistan.

But if waht you really want is a muzzle brake that THREADS on to the existing METRIC threads on the muzzle of a Norinco M-14, then I am aware of only one Canadian source. Joe Dlask has made these four port Norc 14 brakes, but the second last time I stopped by his shop, I cleaned him out of these brakes. BUT, if the demand is there, he will make more.

Last time I stopped by Joe's, I cleaned him out of AR -15 /.30 Cal 3 port muzzle brakes, for my shorties. These are threaded 1/2 X 28 TPI, and seem to be the favorite way of mounting a brake to a SHORTENED M-14 barrel.

I have had good luck mounting Flash hiders, with a set screw, RED loctite, and a hole reamed in the F/H to a tight fit. Several of my earlier shortys were done this way, using Ruger Mini 14 cage F/H and Combo front sight.

HOWEVER,
a flash hider is completely different from a Compensator, which interrupts the gases, and redirects them. There is a LOT more forward thrust on a compensator, trying to pull it off the end of the barrel, than there is with a flash hider. So I definitely would NOT recommend anything but proper threading to fit a comp onto an M-14.

PS: The term "FLASH" hider is a bit of a lie with the M-14 shorties and 7.62 NATO Ball ammo. Military 7.62 NATO ammo has retardents in it, to keep the pressure up at the gas port. Cutting the barrel down and shooting 7.62 NATO means that a LOT of unburned powder explodes out the muzzle [ at dusk you will see a fireball about the size of a five gallon pail ]. No matter how efficient your so called flashider, it won't be as good as the 22" BARREL and the stock 14 F /H.

If you want less flash, try differnt brands of .308 powder, which may not have the retardent in it. Or try reloading your own.
