Hey Guys;

If you EVER wonder about the "quality" of the M14 mystery wood on the M14's... Wonder no more... I am now a true believer that it is CRAP... Here is what I did...

I bought a USGI fiberglass stock and it was missing the top swivel for the sling... So, I took my bucksaw to the Norinco M14 mystery wood and boy, was I surprised! It flakes, cracks and is SO SOFT, that I actually had a hard time getting the first cut started!!! I was able to cut right through the stock with about 4 strokes of the saw...

I highly recommend changing the stock if you have a Norinco M14. My only two complaints about the rifle is the wood and the rear peep sight assembly... Other than that, I LOVE the Norinco M14 product!

Cheers
Jay

I would agree with the rear sight, mine doesn't even click through half of a turn, it is loose and moves around quite a bit. The stock also has to go.

If you degrease it it gets harder, itsn't that often the way.
Hi Different,
First time at the range, stopped after 2 rounds, I took the trigger out, and removed a lump of epoxy :). After that, fine.

Could you use a chu wood stock to practice stock bedding? :confused:

You bet! in fact because the stock is essentially worthless you can practice bedding "tricks" that you might not want to try on an incresingly valuable USGI unit.

For instance, on my chu wood stock I created a "pillar" of epoxy that runs from the rearmost part of the receiver down to the back where the trigger guard mates with the stock, and using a syringe with a 2" 14ga needle and a 1/8" drill I made "mini-pillars" along the sides of the action that extend to the front of the trigger guard.
Plus I used the chu wood stock to do the first version of my folder. All-in-all, I'm pretty happy with my experiments. I'd hate to have wrecked a good birch stock trying this stuff.
