m14 norc come in 223/ 5.56???

Just wondering, i really wanted to get one of these rifles, but in my area and budget / shooting preferences, 223 / 5.56mm would be a lot better for me. Is there any alternative? I was thinking of the ruger mini 14, but i heard they are better as boat anchors than rifles... and their aftermarket accessories are look like id be limited to the A - team :50cal:

anywho, please school me on the availability of these rifles and calibers!

No dice...sorry. There used to be good deals on surplus Portugese and South African 7.62x51mm ammo to ease the cash hit. Is there any of that left anywhere?
 
I have heard few good things about Mini's as far as accuracy is concerned.
If you want something in .223 with decent accuracy and cost is a factor there are several bolt actions which will fill the niche. AR's are great but can be cost prohibitive and you must take it to a registered range. A few years ago I bought a nice used Ruger target rifle at Wholesale Sports in Calgary for $525. The thing shot consistant 1/2" groups with my hand loads and 3/4" with most factory stuff. Something like that would be my recommendation FWIW.
 
"...and budget..." That include the purchase price of the rifle or just the ammo costs? And do you insist on a semi-auto? Non-restricted semi-autos only kind of limits your choices.
A new Ruger Mini-14 Target runs a bit over a grand at Epp's. They're still unproven though. The standard Mini-14 isn't much less expensive new($819 blued. $879 for SS at Epp's) and isn't accurate enough for the money.
 
For the price of a Mini, you're better off getting an AR180B, used at about $1,000. Better accuracy, .223/5.56, uses AR mags (including pistol Mags) and you can play 'pimp my rifle' till the cows come home.

The United Nations has been pushing hard on this Conference on the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects. Their definition of Small Arms and Light Weapons is every gun that is owned by anyone not connected to an official government. As such they strongly frown on the export of any ammunition. This is why the supply is drying up. Australia, Portugal, South Africa, etc have caved to the pressure and stopped exporting any surplus ammunition. I just picked up 140 round SA for $70 at a gun show, the cheapest I have seen it in almost two years. Two years ago I bought my last case for $189 for 880 rounds. It is ridiculous.

I think it might be sort of cool to build an M-14 chambered for 5.56mm. Hmmm. Would need a barrel blank and a receiver blank. Wonder where one might find those things.

Anyone know if the action would still cycle with the lower pressure?
 
canam says he has 308 coming.... but then again marstar has had the M14s coming since ????

I'm really am not ragging on John international/intercontinental buying/shipping had become a bureaucratic nightmare and I appreciate john's efforts in even doing this.. I will get myself on the list for 1 more M14 just to make sure I do my penance....

What, "real" rifles are defined by caliber? A common and well beloved tradition is to build the same rifle in various calibers for various reasons. My wife is uncomfortable shooting 30 caliber. For whatever reason she has shot all five 30 rifles that I own (each of them in a different caliber and a different style) and she didn't like any of them. She then shot a .223 and loved it. I think it would be cool to build an M-14 in .223 for her.
