M14 not seating well in USGI stock

Two questions, with a little bit of background:
Bit of a bummer. I Bought a USGI stock of a board member for my m14. When I put it on my rifle I couldn't close the trigger guard. I look and see the recoil lug is not seating all the way down in the stock... so the hook on the trigger assembly can't lockup with the receiver.
Anyways, after comparing with the original wood, I see that it is not sitting all that high, so I force it. I figure the tighter the better as long as I don't bend anything right?

So to get to my questions: I see daylight between my receiver and the stock, is this normal?
The guy I bought it off filled the selector switch with JB weld, so did he potentially #### up the "levelness" of the stock's surface? (where the receiver sits)

? #2: The handguard clip - and thus the handguard are very loose. How do I tighten this up? i.e. can I remove the clip, shim it and get it back on without making it more loose?

Thanks all.

This is a used stock that has been filled with JB Weld? Was the stock previously bedded for the owner's action? You might want to post pics so we can all see, but I'm sure it's just a tight fit...

It is normal to see gaps through, tight is better than loose.

Handguard rattle....one way is to do a NM mod to fix the handguard...or even just bending the tabs up without the puttying.

Most people do not bed GI fg stocks.

If you have daylight under the heel of the receiver....that is bad, from an 1 1/2 forward for two inches....this is a good thing.

A tight trigger guard is good, within reason........too tight isn't good.

The receiver lugs should go down to the bottom of the stock, clear the path if you have to, or file off any JB in the area of the cut out if this is "hanging" up the receiver.

GG&FB

The cutout can also be filled with too much material on the inside of the stock, which can interefere with the bolt when pulled all the way back. When I bought my rifle already in a usgi stock I had both problems, too high and causing uneven seating of the receiver (mostly noticable by uneven pressure at the front ferule) and some contact with the bolt.

Thanks gents. Here are some pics.
The heel is seated a little better after some light filing.

Heel looks good from this side, no?

Not so good from this side, but it is more of photographic issue.

I know, I know, OUCH the JB weld job looks like ####!

You can see where I filed here, I really went light just to see where there was JB weld...

It's the ridge (where the op rod track starts) that I want to know about: Is it supposed to be there???

Thanks for your help. My other options? Return the stock to the seller??

I wish you were closer to Toronto or Collingwood and I could take you through this problem....

Thanks Barney, it's the thought that counts... I'll try and get work to send me out to T.O... think they'll notice the M14 in my check-in baggage? :p

HQUOTE]

oh my M14.....who did so *** filling job?????? ....

 The member of this board, to remain unnamed- for now-, who I bought the stock from.

The ugly of it doesn't bother me. What bothers me is the potential ####-up factor on the geometry...

Sorry Winz, never answered your questions directly;
Yes, used stock filled with JB Weld.
No not bedded from what I can see - just the selector cut-out ...and maybe some spillage that got spread around where it didn't belong????

The gap on the both sides is normal.....no worries there.:D

I can see a slight gap at the reciever heel........this is bad.:(

The area that was JB welded needs to be level with the rear of the stock/heel area.More filing/sanding is in order and check with a straight edge.

The trigger assembly should lock up tight, but not overly tight as mention earlier.

SKBY.

I think you have a JB weld job that was started but not finished. On the right side at the back for the selector cut out, I can see why your trigger group closes extremely tightly. That side of the receiver isn't sitting down because of JB weld. You must clean/file this up to get proper fit.

Near the front is where you JB weld for the pin fix - to keep it from walking out. Watch for the op rod to clear everything.

All in all, a bit of work and you will have custom fit that USGI stock to your receiver.

Exactly what Skullboy said. The rear of the heel, or the horseshoe tang could use a layer of JB Weld since that is a critical bedding area. The rest of things look just fine, I would not fret.

Good opportunity to work with the JB Weld.... Of course, when you JB Weld that horseshoe tang area, apply paste wax or some PAM Spray liberally to the rear of the reciever so that any excess JB Weld will not stick to the metal. You will achieve a custom skin tight fit between rear of the reciever and the stock contact area. Way cool.
