Just thought I would let you people know that I just ordered one today from GMK armoury (807-346-4088) and I believe they still have others in stock. Came to $545 tax in, including sling, cleaning kit and 1 5/20 rd mag. That also includes Xpedited shipping, with signature.

Like any gun,its all about the ammo you use.The first couple times I went to the range,I was using south african surplus, and was pretty disappointed with the results. Then I tried winchester supreme ballistic silvertips. The gun just loves them.I was hitting redbull cans every time at 160 yards at the range this morning(pretty good for a stock m14.)The only upgrade I made so far was a USGI fiberglass stock.

Ammo, got it. A gun club close to me sells boxes of American Eagle for $15 (rounds) Now I know they aren't the best but I'm going to start off with those just to get a feel for the rifle and maybe zero the sites. Then I'll start moving onto the better brands.

I just found it to be pretty inconsistant. The best groups I was able to get at a hundred yards wer 6 inches plus.I spoke to my gunsmith about it , he said I should try better ammo.I tried a couple different kind of commercial ammo, with much better results.

Got it in the mail Tuesday, degreased it last night. Stock will probably be the first thing to go. Horrible wood. First impression; feel like I'm owning a piece of history, feels good, powerful. Really nice rifle. Finish on the steel is decent. Flash suppressor still has some metal shavings on the inside. Guess I'll have to get a real thin file and file them off.

Just in case you interested, I spoke to Boyds a few days ago and they will be doing another run of M1A stocks in August.

The typical US military accurizing trick was to ream the insides of a USGI flash suppressor for greater bullet clearance. If I remember Hungry's clinic right, you need a .400" tapered reamer, a No.7 maybe. A 3/8" drill bit in a drill press might work almost as well, of course without nipping the barrel crown (1/8 = .125" , 3 x .125" = .375"). Put a sticky oily patch in the bore up near the muzzle before you cut or file anything.

Are there any mods or tweaks that any of you would recommend??

Go to the M14 clinic Hungry is holding in November. You won't regret it. He will tell you all of the mods and tweaks. You will actually do alot of them on the spot (at virtually no expense). I just went to the clinic he held at the beginning of July and I will go again if he holds another one in Ontario.

Good thinking on the patch in the bore, wish I had thought of that beforehand:rolleyes: Guess I'll be checking my barrel tonight. That was stupid of me. Good idea on reaming the inside of the flash suppressor.
