Hi guys,

I'm looking at putting a open red dot sight on my m14. Can I get some recommendations on these? I was looking at the bushnell tactical red dot First Strike. I'm open to any make and model as long as its not too $$$$. I need something reliable too though. Any ideas?

Thanks

Wow I haven't looked at Bushnells site in a while! Sand trs25, Fastfire looking red dot! What do you want from your rifle/red dot? That first strike model has a 5moa dot, which is pretty big depending on how far you want to shoot accurately to.

Basically 5MOA (minute of angle) means the dot is going to cover up approximately 5" of your target at 100 yards, more so at 150 yards. So depending on what you want, it may be different to shoot as accurately with that large of a dot. Depending on how tight your budget is, I've had really good luck with the Bushnell TRS-25 (it's a 3MOA dot iirc), 2MOA would be even better for longer ranges, I also have a 1.5MOA red dot that works very nice.

On my Shorty I went with Garand rear sights and a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot with an Ultimak M8 front rail .This set up will a cowitness with the iron sights.
The TRS is the lowest mounting red dot and is pretty good . The Vortex Sparc is a little better and has a smaller dot and a slightly larger optic but its quite abit more money and mounts a little higher .

I mounted my Sparc in front of my TRS for size comparison..The Sparc sits a little higher than a TRS but it will still cowitness with my iron sights

Another vote here for the TRS-25 as I've been very happy with mine. It's a great little optic for the money and doesn't get me too high off the stock (I really didn't want to add a cheek riser). Mine is a modified shorty, navy sight, USGI op rod spring and match op rod spring guide, USGI trigger parts, UTG rail and USGI stock. She runs great.

Very interesting comparison of the TRS-25/Sparc chalkriver. My TRS is too high to co-witness with my sights so maybe the UTG rail is higher? Interestingly enough, I've got a Sparc on the way to try as well... and as an aside I was born and raised in Deep River, so maybe us Valley boys think alike on this kind of stuff.

Yes Baron it looks like great minds think alike ..lol .
Gotta love the Ottawa Valley :) I have been here since 1980 and will never leave.
The Sparc wont help with your cowitness issue as it sits higher than a TRS.
I was told that the TRS is the lowest mounting red dot out there.
The Ultimak is a little lower than your UTG and a really good front rail but because my rifle came with the shorter barrel the profile is a little different than a regular length m-14 and I had to remove a bit of material from inside my Ultimak to get it to fit right .

Baron ..... The Ultimak Rail sits flush with top of receiver

Cerealblast this is the size of a 3 moa dot and I wouldn't want one any bigger..the Sparc has a little smaller dot (2 moa)

Thanks Chalkriver: the CASM series "MRD" base/hood might be a good option for you. It is the lightest red dot in the world and our base/hood seats in your M14's sight pocket (it is that small) lower than anything in the marketplace. The red dot the base/hood is compatible with is the Jpoint, a well-respected red dot and not too expensive either. This product is very new to our web site. I'll get more photos up as soon as possible. I am just learning that CRAFM, a dealer here on CGN can bring in the JPOINT dots.

This is something I'm looking for, do you have one installed that i could see, also does it need a mount? you can pm me or post here. Thanks :)

I have to say Frank, the MRD set up looks like a real slick idea. Are you going to offer this base and hood "with" a jpoint?
If so, put me on the list. I have an off cgn client who is eager to try this on his overseas duty rig.
