I'm looking for a new gas piston and a muzzle break/flash hider not sure which is better or what the difference is. Would like some input from people who have one or know a good online site to buy these parts

Armtac in BC
Treeline in the states.

There are lots or breaks out there ranging from $75-$350. You have to decide what YOU want ant what YOU'RE after.

I will be getting a break soon that is a direct bolt on to the metric thread. Nice streamline, but then I'm not after tacticool. About $100.00 and made out in B.C.

There are a couple versions of the M-305 out there now. Most originally come with a flashider that is held in place by 3 lugs and a castlenut .
Best brake out there for these is a smith enterprize.$$

Springfield Armory make these and they fit the rifles using a castlenut , I have had a couple and are pretty good. spcamno on here sells them as well as Brownells

The socom 18 that I just bought has a threaded muzzle and a reversible flashider .
I am not sure of the thread pitch and there are no brakes out for it yet I believe.

I have another rifle that I had cut down to 18.5 in and rethreaded to 28x1/2 pitch then bought a brake from Blackrose tactical in BC

Socom has standard m305 metric thread, or so I have been told.

This one is made by BBD

You cannot buy M-14 parts, of any kind, from the U.S. All M-14 parts are restricted for export by their Federal government. There are no M-305 specific parts, Stateside, as Slick Willy(Clinton) banned the importation of the rifles back in the mid-90's. M1A parts are ok though.
A muzzle brake, not break, alters how the gases exit the muzzle. Usually by sending 'em up and back, thereby reducing the felt recoil. A flash hider doesn't really hide anything, but it spreads the muzzle flash out so it reduces the amount of flash seen by the shooter. If you've ever fired a firearm in low light(early or late in the day) you'll know how big the muzzle flash of even a .22 lr can be. Blinds the shooter. A flash hider reduces that. For us(most Americans too), one or the other is really just cosmetic.

treelinem14.com for a USGI flash hider

Armtac or brownells for a Smith Enterprise muzzle break

Flash hiders are technically not muzzle breaks and visa versa... if you want something to control muzzle rise go with the Smith Enterprise break... if you like the vintage m14 look and you don't want the deer/moose/zombie to see your muzzle flash then go with the USGI flash hider.
