Quick question,

I have always loved the M14, but I have heard different reports from the Springfield and the Norinco models that leave me with a less-than-confident feeling about purchasing one. I was told that a custom build would yield better results.

Where do you all find the parts that you need? Like Norinco receivers, USGI stocks and USGI spec's internals etc. I've looked around at a few of the general vendors, but I haven't found anything.

Thanks for all who post!

also check out treelinem14 they do ship most parts to Canada
:agree:
Yep a truly stand up cat. He sent me a package that never made it to me and instead of hassling around and waiting another 3 months for it to come he shipped it out asap and got it with in a week.
A company like that is truly hard to find in this day and age.

"...I think I spelld that right..." 'Spelled' or 'Spelt'. The former is American. The latter is the Queen's English. snicker.
"...less-than-confident..." Think in terms of what you want to do with the rifle. For hunting, it won't need any mods. Target shooting is a whole different thing. That becomes a personal decision of how much you want to spend. Mind you, a lot of the issue is related to the Norincos not being American made, being banned by Slick Willy for political reasons and a great deal of Internet BS hanging on from very early Polytech rifles.
"...they do ship most parts to Canada..." As long as they have the U.S. exporter's licence(Dept of Commerce) and the U.S. export permit(Dept of State). Otherwise, they're violating U.S. law. Not that that affects us.

thanks for all the links. I've been looking around all of those sites. some really impressive stuff! but i must ask a question to all of the M14 owners: Reports of this gun strike me as a 1911 of the rifle world. When it works, it works great, but it takes a lot of tinkering, money, time and parts to bring it up to that level of accuracy and reliability. Is that indeed the case?

Just looking at some of the parts online, with the different stocks, USGI internals, M25 forged receiver etc. Seems to add up pretty high.

Wouldn't one be better off with a modern battle rifle like the MR308 or something else of a similar flavour (LMT comes to mind)? This is, of course, totally excluding Canada's NR/R laws.

I'm still new to the shooting world. I am young, and just finished school and working on getting a real career going at some point. Once I do, I will have more disposable income. However currently, things like my car and savings take priority.

I currently have some nice rifles and gear now. Working on bringing them up to what I had envisioned for them, and then I hope to shoot them as often as I can and eventually perhaps do hunting and competition shooting with them.

I also enjoy the thrill of building things up over time. So in a round-about way, I suppose I'd like an M1A style rifle for hunting, competition, and when I eventually move to an outdoor range in the future, target shooting.

I'd prefer reliability over anything else. I hate the idea of constantly tinkering and replacing parts. A simple clean-up and regular maintenance is all that I want to do to keep my rifle in tip-top shape.

Accuracy is always a plus. I don't think I will ever be capable of shooting sub-MOA accuracy. But good-excellent practical accuracy would be great :)

I personally have had 2 M14's (norc m305s) the first a short barrel 18.5 inch and it was pretty good right out of the box no complaints at all, I ended up selling it to help get an M1 Garand. after doing a lot of research and reading about m14's I decided to get another this time the proper size 22 inch barrel, it was fine out of box too, but it has been my personal choice to tinker with it to add parts replace parts, basically go to town on it to make it the way I want to, I did not need to spend money on it, I wanted to, and its been a lot of fun in the process, I have learned a lot about the rifle it been a great project for me, its kinda sad now cause I'm nearly done how I want it to look, there is a good chance I will be picking up another M14 to start another kind of project soon. It really all comes down to what you want, some might say if you wanted a better version on the m14, you could get on from springfield, fulton armory, LRB, TRW, but hey for $450 bucks it aint too shabby. Good luck your search.

Depends on what you are looking for.
Certain CGNer's take it out hunting big game. Some CGNer's take it out to the range to piss off guy's with there H&K 308 AR's and shoot better groups for half the price. Me personally would agree with the above statement and state that you should think about what you want out of a semi-auto rifle and go for it.
Also I have a nork receiver that I tricked out for $2k and it is just like Ron from SEI does and this bad boy put's my friends Sako TRG to shame @ 750 meters with no bull but then again it's nick-name is "The Anchor" in honor of the Navy who still keeps it around for deployment in all of it's different branches. Whether its the marines to the coast guard, it's the rifle that just won't go away...
Of course it was developed by a Canadian go figure ;)

Sorry for the necro, but I was looking at the LRB M25 from Armtac. Looks awesome. Quick question, is that a USGI spec rifle save for the NM flashhider and such? Or would I have a more durable, reliable rifle if I custom build a LRB M25 from USGI parts? Or would that basically be the same thing.

Just one is made from new parts and the other is put together of old left over surplus parts that should be still in mint condition.
