Yes it is necessary.Unless you want your op rod spring guide to come loose and have a heck of a time getting your mag out and then your #### will fall off.

I did the hungry welfare approach one farther on this. I couldn't afford the popsicle so I just used Silcone. Worked better than the first attempt I tried with JB weld. It also worked slick for filling in the same spot in the Troy stock.
