Well guy's I need some help. I picked up a norc m14 last fall and my first trip to the range I found out that it would not pick up a cartridge from the mag. So after a good cleaning and inspection, everything seems find from what I can tell. So I order my self a new mag. hoping that it may be the problem. Well it's not the mag, it appears that the bolt is not travelling far enough back to pick up a cartridge. I know this has been discussed before but I can't seem to find that post. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check to see if your gas system is on the barrel on the right spot.
It might not be and there fore geting not enough gas the cycly.

Check as m39a2 stated it is possible, I have not seen this issue with a norc.

To do this, pull op-rod back and lock bolt back, with light in the bore you should be able to look through the bottom hole on the gas system and see light.....a nice round hole.

Did you clean the gas cylinder?
Did you put any lube on it???? Hope not.....needs to be dry.
The rest of the rifle should have grease on every metal to metal contact point. To start with.....lube on the heavy side, it may mean that you will have to clean it sooner but you'll know if it it's a lube issue.

THe Chi-com spring may be too stiff, I have seen that before with the norcs.....I can send you a GI one if needed.

Did you tighten the gas nut enough???? That more often than not is the answer.

Hungry here: All of the above suggested are good items to pursue. Also ensure that the screw in the gas cylinder assembly (right side) is pointing up and down (vertical) without any deviation from the axis (top down). Ensures that gas port spindle valve is totally opened.

What ammo are you using?

Does your mag bind on anything in the rifle....or is it really loose?

I had a lot of feeding troubles. Thought it was the mags...well in my case it was the lube.

I used a quite thick kind of lube. The result was that the gun almost not could cycle. Changed to a more "light" kind of lube and it works fine.

Whoops, spindle valve could be suspect: All of the above suggested are good items to pursue. Also ensure that the screw in the gas cylinder assembly (right side) is pointing up and down (vertical) without any deviation from the axis (top down). Ensures that gas port spindle valve is totally opened.

Get back to us as soon as you can and let us know what is and what ain't working for you....

Well guys I checked the gas sysem and it seems to be fine, I can see light and the hole is nice and round. Here is the answers to some of your questions. Yes it feeds the first round. Yes I cleaned the gas cylinder. No I did not put any lube on it. The gas nut is tight and both my mags (1 norc and 1 GI) both seem to fit fine. As far as ammo goes I've tried various 7.62 surplus with latest being SA. The screw in the gas cylinder is pointing up and down. Hey gg&fb I was thinking that it may be the spring but wasn't sure if that would do it.

Is the rifle cocking the hammer but the closing bolt is not stripping off the next round?

FWIW, short stroking (FTF) can also be ammo related.

You mentioned SA; have you tried it with any other surplus?

I have experienced short stroking with some SA lot 590A- 84 and with some Port lot 78-20. Might not be enough 'bang mojo' to cycle fully.

Just my 5 cents worth.

Problem solved, I changed the op rod spring with the one GG&FB so kindly sent me free of charge and it fixed the problem. Now all I have to due is find a new stock, some mounts and scope and get it dialed in. Once again I thank everybody for there help.
