M14 problem

Hey guys. I have a Norc M14 which has been done by P&D into their SOCOM model.

Anyways, I love this thing, what a blast to shoot. Today at the range I started to notice alot of Failure to feeds. I would fire a shot, and then click. The spent casing was extracted and ejected just fine, but a new round was not chambered. It was almost like the action was moving too fast, or the mag spring too weak (they are stiff springs though)

JUst wondering if any of you guys have ever heard of this, or if it could be a gas problem? Can you tune your gas system?

Thanks in advance for any input

The gas system can be shimmed, but it would not cause this problem.

Check your gas plug, is it good and tight.
THis is the most common FTF problem.

I have had a few Chi-com mags that have done this also, have you tried using a different mag?

Given that P&D has done some work I imagine the barrel is timed properly so that should not be part of the equation.

Try that for starters.

PS have you looooooobed the crap out of it, hammer/bolt contact, hammer hooks, bolt/receiver and op-rod.
I go crazy with the loob, I use plastilube, 'more is better' :) has always worked for me and all the people that shoot my builds.

buffed out where? on the inside walls? I noticed the mags are kinds stiff, maybe there's some burrs somewhere resisting movement of the follower.

GG&FB- It is lubed good, I will bring some lubriplate home from work tomorrow. It does it much more with the factory Chicom 5 rounder than with my 20/5 mag. I don't know anything about m14s/m305s. I will go check the gas plug right now. Thanks guys.

Yeehaw !!

No loctite, not sure off the top of my head about 20ft/lbs......but give her a good hard twist with a combo tool if you have one.
They are nice and short, so it's almost hard to over tighten them very easily.....without a gas lock wrench or jumping on it that is.

ok, so hand tight is good then? Just to make sure, the gas plug is the big cap with a socket head under the barrel right? because that's what was loose. Thanks again for the help guys

This is why a combo tool up your butt (stock) is always a good thing to have around......for those days when your nuts are loose at the range.

Later....... GG&FB out

Always important to properly deal with loose nuts...;)

i get mine tight , then give it another bump with the heel of the hand- same deal to loosen it- and maybe get 2 cobo tools- they used to be cheap as borsch- usually carry a whole buttstock tool kit with me when i use mine- and a broken shell extractor just in case-

Those who are going "Commando" will have loose nuts all the time:eek: :p

My buddy has the same as yours & it fires flawlessly(#2 of 10)..Note: We did use Norinco mags also & about 80rds Hornady 150gr, no Milsurp! Bring it back to P&D for a check-up, it has a year warranty on it.

Just a quick question for you guys in the know; does this problem happen with a loose gas nut because there is not enough gas pressure to cycle the action all the way backwards, therefore not letting the bolt group pick up another round from the mag?

Thanks for all the help guys. I think I have to go buy a new rubber O-ring thingy, as i kinda crushed the one on there while tightening

hmmmm, its looks like a washer. maybe it's not rubber, but whatever it is, it's soft.

There's not supposed to be a washer on the gas plug. There never was one on either the USGI M14 or the Norinco M14S or any of the M1A variants. A loose gas plug may leak enough gas to cause "short-stroking".
