M14 Rear sight setup

Just got my Poly M305 and the rear sight adjustments don't seem to click smooth. Elevation knob never goes back to the same spot at lowest level, and the wind adjustment has 7 clicks total R > L. Nothing on the net about maintenance or calibration of the rear sight. I suspect the knobs or screw need to be at a certain tension (torque), but... maybe I am missing something.
Any idea's or adjustment procedures welcomed.

Here is the procedure:

1) Get two screwdrivers that fit the notches in the sight drums and turn them counter-clockwise until the pinions slip out of the rear sight.
2) Grasp sight aperature and pull until the sight spring pops loose and lift the sight assembly off the rifle.
3) Throw that chinese cr@p in the grabage.
4) Install USGI sights (M14 or M1) in reverse order.

You could try the equipment exchange, ask Marstar, or try e-bay. Garand sights aren't export controlled and some sellers will ship to Canada.

The iron sights on all of the chinese rifles seem to be hit and/or miss! Sometimes you get lucky (I liked my Poly sights on my 2009 rifle), but I still replaced ONLY the windage and elev. knobs. I still say that if you plan on mounting a scope then leave you iron sights there. Don't try adjusting them because the improperly heat treated knobs will strip and give you goofy surprises. That being said, if you are going to shoot ONLY iron sights, then by all means, swap out the elevation and windage knobs for USGI or M1 Garand equivalents often found on the EE Forums. I just sold a set.......

I wish I was nearby to help you inspect that unit. My 2009 Poly M14 had decent sights, but I still did not trust them for my dedicated iron sight use.

I still (like you) have not found a good description on the true "Feeling" of the necessary tension for the windage and elevation knobs/relationship (anywhere on the internet). Hence I wished I was closer to you to show you. That's why I attempt to get M14 clinics going so that you can attend and listen to Boot Camp 101 (the M14 introduction and tweaks).

Maybe someone can chime in and help out the original post dude! :D

Here's What I Did

On a benchrest, I went out the range and popped a few rounds to sight in. then loosened them and adjusted according to my eyeballs and where I hold my head on stock to shoot. Then I tighted the bejeebies out of the two screws (not so tight as to strip, but pretty tight). The rear peep is not too bad.

Then I went home and got out the dremel and thinned out the front sight to a nice blade. I actually had to reduce by about a half mm due to the roughness of it. See my other "after Calgary clinic" for the amazing results. That thing can really shoot and ring the 300 yard gongs all day long.

Now that I have a pretty good load backing it up, I am still not satisfied and now further tweeking the loads again. Trying CCI 250's (magnum primers) and 748 loads.:D

Well it looks like the rear sight situation will require me to take it apart and see if it is salvageable. I can’t see them making it too complex, as it is a service rifle.
Plan ‘B’ will be to hunt down a replacement.
I do see that many shooters have added a scope, and a few posts have a list of many mounts. Just to keep it simple, what are 2 good mounts, and a reasonable place to purchase?
Thanks for all the feedback so far.

OK. Plan 'A' = failure. OMG. The sight mechanics have potential, but they put little effort to get it manufactured correctly. I’ll get them close manually, but ……
The rough finish on the receiver has me concerned that even replacing with USGI sights ( plan ‘B’) would fail.
I think it is time to go to a Sadlak scope mount solution.
