M14 reserves dry??

The long 22 inch barrel feels pretty normal. And the rifle not that heavy. Maybe with 20 rounds of 7,62 would be heavy, but I guess I will never know what that feels like.

You just have to tape 3 more full mags onto the one in the rifle to know what it feels like ;)

I'm seriously wondering where i can get my hands on an M14 here in Quebec. All of the ones i see are always out west in BC/Alberta.

Flash hider does not appear to be welded on. No welding marks I can see.

There should be two spot welds on the underside, buy the bayonette lug.
Sometimes they're tack welded really well and need to be drilled out. Sometimes, the welds can be broken with a plastic hammer on a piece of wood (pushing the flash hider forward off the barrel)

Why did you think your gas cylinder is out of index?

ps. the 22" barrel M305 I received in the mail today seems to be pretty much like what you described too.

My FH is welded, I noticed the two spot welds underneath.

It's soaking overnight with Liquid Wrench, and I'm going to try heating it a little and then loosening the CN.

I don't my gas cylinder is out of index, but on the end of the op rod, it seems like 60% of the piston makes contact, so maybe a new op rod spring guide may straighten things out.

do you have a picture of this?

The piston makes contact and is roughly centered, but it seems like one side has more contact and hence the resultant wear pattern. However, it appears centered on the op rod end. Will a round op rod spring guide help with the op rod and having a more even/consistent/straighter travel?

I don't think a round op rod spring guide will make a difference.

That wear seems to look fine. at least it's centered. On my 18.5" barrelled M305, the wear is off to the side by a millimetre or so, and that's with the barrel properly indexed.

Nothing on these rifles are perfectly square. It bothered me (a lot) at first, but now I don't care as much.
meh, it's a $400 main battle rifle.

shoot and enjoy. repeat.

After disassembling mine to clean the oil out I notice my gas nut doesn't get snug until 7 or 8 o'clock. I'm guessing I need to shim it. I stuck some shims onto my brownells order, so next is finding the appropriate instructions. Thanks for the info on the flash hider removal. I will try beating mine to all buggery this weekend ;D

Without the castle nut pliers, how hard is it to get that nut off? I'm thinking a deft hand with a hammer and small pin punch might work in a pinch.

And what are the consequences of firing it with a not-quite-tight gas nut?

Will my wossname fall off?

Try flipping your gas lock over and see if that tightens it up closer to 6. You might get lucky.

I bought one from Lever Arms.

22'' barrel, 2 5/20 mags, sling, cleaning kit in stock rattling around. Barrel looks to be indexed correctly to my eye. Front sight is on straight and lines up with rear sight. Rear sight click positively.

Rifle is super tight, man, trying to cycle the action manually is tough, either the springs are strong, the action is tight, or it just needs breaking in (or I need to put my purse down haha). Anyways it smoothed up after some cycling. I didn't really notice too much of a *ping* when releasing the op rod. I suppose once I take it apart and do some cleaning and removal of the oils it might start to resonate.

The bolt stop didn't work immediately at first, but after working it a few times, and then trying with mags, it works perfectly now. The safety is pretty stiff to engage, but disengaging is easy.

Trigger pull is 2-stage, very light and crisp. Consistent. I like the trigger very much.

Finishing on the rifle seems pretty good for a Chinese rifle, my first. There are obvious machining marks but overall, you have to be looking for these things on purpose. It looks symmetrical.

Mags were a little tough getting in and out at first. The first mag was fine, the second mag had a hard time getting out. Then I realized that it's due to Canadian quality control, so whoever riveted the mag, didn't put the rivet completely flush, so the elevated part was binding a little bit on the mag release latch. After cycling the mags in and out, the two parts have begun to wear into each other and now it's not a problem. That is really my only complaint so far about this rifle after a surface inspection. I suppose a little filing on the rivet can further alleviate this, simple problem (1st world problem)

Synthetic stock is pretty decent, sturdy enough, some sharp/rough marks on the edges. Sling swivels seem questionable, especially the one up front. It's not straight, just off by a little. I'm sure they function fine though.

Question, how do you open the trap door in the butt stock?

Also the roll mark doesn't say made in China. As in Lever Arms tradition it reads on the left side of the receiver:

M305
Cal 7.62
Imported by Lever Arms [Serial No.]

I will have to take the gun down and make sure everything underneath is okay later.

I think the gas port at the front might not be lined up, but I have to check when the gun is disassembled.

Overall, I'm happy with my first gamble on a Chinese M14. I didn't buy 2, so I'll sacrifice only one testicle (thanks Hungry). Looking forward to you guys spending more of my money on upgrades/accessories later, and doing a clinic with Hungry in the future.

Cheers!

P.S. Forgot to add my initial impression: I like! Buy one!

P.S.S. I hope I don't come back and eat my words after taking this rifle apart and finding a whole bunch of problems! *cross fingers* aka You guys better help me :p

I would inspect your bolt very closely and ensure that it will actually stay open after you have removed the empty magazine.

This is what my rifle did when it was new, I ended up using a bolt from one of my other m14s and it cleared up my issues. Head space is nice and tight but my barrel does need indexing.

Notice how when I remove the magazine the bolt slams closed. It turned out that the face the bolt stop rests against had been smoothed by a sander or grinder too much and would cam the bolt stop out of the way once the magazine was no longer holding it in place.
