replacing your barrel with a match, is a good idea.

Okay apapro:

Before you sink in your hard 'after-tax' dollars into this project, read about my experiences first. I've built more NM M14's , M1A's and M1 Garands than I've got fingers and toes so I ain't a newbie at this accurizing game. I built TWO of the Norinco M14's into NM shooters (all USGI parts with Douglas XX Air guaged bbl's.) and then sold them since I compete in Service, Operational Sniper, Counter-Sniper and Operational pistol games... too many games to spend time building boomsticks.

I really enjoy saving people money or rather saving them from running out and spending all kinds of money when all they needed was an accurate Savage or M700 or T3 or StealthII.

Keep us posted with your findings,

Barney

In my experience this has actually been the lowest return on investment when working with M14's. I've built a few M14's, but nothing like girlsgunsandfastbikes, and the most accurate is a box stock Norinco barrelled action sitting in a bedded maple stock, with national match sights and flash hider. GG&FB and Hungry are the best guys in this thread to talk to about your project, and likely the best you'll find on this site, for instance and hope you don't mind, but here's some od GG&FB's M14 collection:

Thanks for the info guys, I was not intending to spend huge dollars on this project, as I have read a few of the articles concerning building a NM M14!!

I Just wanted to know of a good M14 Mechanic. I would like the rifle to shoot at least into 1.5 MOA. I have tried a huge amount of different loads and I have not been able to find one that works. I have had a few group rather well but they never seem to duplicate. I want to hunt and compete with the M14.

I have two competition guns that I use, I just wanted to have a FUN hunting/shooting rifle.

I have just purchased a Mcmillan stock for this rifle, it is one of the U.S. Marine Corps stocks that they have been selling. And when that arrives I will get the necessary work done to get it up and running to see if it has any better potential than it does now.

Does unitizing the gas system make that much of a difference, or does shimming work the best???

Thanks again

Shimming will cost you about $10 - $20 ...that is the best place to start.

The stock will certainly help, have it bedded.....or try it yourself.
Unitizing the gas system will help but you're looking at more $$$

I think the shimming and stock will get you 90% of the way.

I do believe that Ron Smith has it on the $ with his gas lock sight and vortex Flash hider....this seems to reduce barrel tension and increase harmonics = accuarcy !!!

Norincos =
