So today I disassembled my new Norinco. Only one problem. The safety doesn't hold when dry firing. Is this common on Norincos and can it be fixed without any parts? I can see how it supposed to hold but it appears that the notch on the safety needs to be little bit higher to fully engage.

Mine doesn't move an inch
The ONLY way to get the safety engaged is to push the safety in at the SAME time as pulling the bolt back (pull the bolt back halfway and the safety will engage). The safety will disengage fine but will not reengage until you pull the bolt back about halfway.

maybe you arent pushing hard enough! those safeties are a little hard to budge
drache, as to your bolt staying open issue, have you checked the manual? Notice the little thing on the left side of the receiver, just over a hollow spot on the stock, that's the bolt stop
when you insert an empty mag and cycle the action, the action stays open because the empty mag is elevating the bolt stop thus stopping the bolt...
press and hold the bolt stop while cycling to keep the action opened

On my new M14S the safety takes some force to actually click in and engage. Looking at it's operation with the trigger group out, I see that the safety lever has to overcome some of the hammer spring tension. Once its seated fully into it's notch on the side of the hammer the safety lever actually pulls the hammer down slightly taking the spring tension off of the sear.
Is this the the proper operation? The force needed to engage/dis-engage the safety is lots but not too tough and very positive.

Ok so I took a small hammer and gave the safety a tap and it engaged like it should and the trigger doesn't move an inch. Now the safety will actually go on although it's hard. Guess it needed to be taught a lesson!
As for the bolt staying open THANK YOU! This is my first M14 and learning all the ins and outs can be annoying!

So all you have to do is carry a small hammer around with you. Problem solved.
Actually if you take the trigger group out of the rifle, #### it, and then sit in front of the TV frying your brain on whatever suits your fancy, and just click the safety on and off it will loosen up. About a hundred clicks out to produce noticeable results.
Don't do it if someone else if there watching with you, however.

actually after hitting it with the hammer the first time it loosened up a bit but it's still pretty tough. So I just had the entire gun sitting in my lap playing with the safety while surfing the internet and watching "Fraggle Rock"

When the most complicated firearm you work in is a old Bolt Action, a semi-auto takes some getting used to. I'm still scared to break this bad boy down!
I'd rather wait and have someone show me the proper way. Once someone shows me I can do it without problem.
