M14 - Sage EBR Build

I love my M14, but this is a perfect example of what some people have said. I have a Norinco M14 with factory barrel, Sadlak spring guide and Wolff Spring, EBR stock and the best group I got was 1.75MOA.

Not sure if I want to throw another $6-7k just to chase that 0.25MOA. I've sort of accepted it for what it is and I still like it, but it probably won't be the first thing I grab if I want to shoot groups.

If you're looking for a local guy that knows his way around M14s, I hear there's a guy that works at DVC Indoor shooting range.

I have never see someone get .25 MOA with M14 , even gold plated one!

Another option to pursue if you're not set on an EBR is to build up a USMC M14 DMR-type rifle in the McMillan stock or do something close in one of the stocks that 45ACPKing used to make and sell. They're not as easy to diy because you need to bed the action in the stock vs just bolting it into the chassis but the accuracy results are just as good and you end up with a less front heavy setup. I've got a pretty much stock Norc M14 that I've done the accuracy mods to and it's bedded in one of Thomas' stocks and with my handloads it reliably prints 5 round 1.5 moa groups and I've taken it out to 830 yards and gone 2/3 on a 66% IPSC plate at that range. Just another option for ya.

Oh yea,

Nice!,

But Like I said he can build it even less ,
brand new Norinco $700 approx
SAGE EBR $1100 approx
gun-smiting $250 approx

around $3K he can have one ,

10K CAN project including Forged new receiver and Keriger barrel and all SEI parts .

an EBR system or EMR most of the parts are SEI ( Smith Ent) and cost a lot to be close to EBR real ,

I think your prices are US dollar .otherwise you got USED parts like scope Mark 4 or really good deal , however that is an exception if you know the system and market , for a new guy is different

All used except for the MK4 rings and Sage cantilever. I wasn’t going to go full bore into an expensive project. I saved money putting it together myself. It took me 6 months of patience to wait for the right deals to build it.

My advice would be to watch the EE and wait for some good deals on built barreld actions or a nicley tuned M305. If you build it new and decided you don’t like it you will have a hard time recouping your losses.

I'm so glad you are still happy with the stock. I don't hear much from owners but there is a lot of them out there.
I don't make stocks for sale anymore. Still working with composites in my shop but not gun related except for my own needs.
maybe one day I'll get back to doing rifle stocks and AR-10 handguards n things but the gig I have right now let's me do life on my terms so till that dries up.....

mcmillan's are nice stocks and a good option. I enjoyed working with them on customer builds and they do provide exceptional results when bedded properly.

I don't shoot it nearly as much as I used to because I've been competing with bolt guns for a bit now and that's all I really have time to shoot but when I do bring the M14 out, man is it just a pleasure to shoot. If I put another one together, I'll be hunting around for another one of your stocks for sure.

I thought Barney said something about M14s being bottomless money pits and pouring tons of time and money into them would only get you negligible gains, and the best way to chase accuracy would be a bolt gun? I may have remembered incorrectly though.

I remember having a similar conversation with him but I think he was referring to his truck and I was talking about my house, cars, bikes, kids and wife, etc.

Just to keep everyone informed..... and seeking additional inputs.

Sage EBR Stock - Check
Rifle - still hunting
Glass - waiting on deals
Cantilevel mount - sourcing.

100% agree ,
I think he needs to find himself first ,
shooting sport ?
video games?
or movies?

the only reason I have it cause I'm in love with M14 platform!
shooting sport and video games - definitely not going to lie about that....

Doing that now ._.

If you want to do it, do it. Just make sure your expectations are in line with reality. I went down the m14 hole with an LRB M25 USMC DMR build. It shoots about 1.25 moa off a rest. I love it and am keeping it forever. But it's a very heavy moderately accurate rifle. I've read people claim 1/2 moa m14s. Total b.s. Make sure it's what you want.

I have one EBR chasse for sale , black

This is a great thread. I have had and still have a few M305 and M14S Norincos. I agree 110% that the Sage has a weight problem. I've had a Sage EBR with a 18.5" Norinco since 2013 and she hasn't seen the light of day ... and I still have issues with the retention pin for the main spring with Norinco rifles in the chassis. However - it's a worthwhile build and a great platform for DMR.

Im a C1/FAL guy and wanted a 7.62 NR rifle. But now there are some great options with BCL and Stag NR etc.

I missed Barneys last M14 clinic here. He is a wealth of info!

950 bucks for the sage stock, just gets you started, then you want to replace your op rod spring, op rod, gas piston, new gas shims, You will also have to remove and re install your flash hider. Not easy as it has been tack welded to the barrel. When you get done you might get 1.5 to 2 inch groups at 100 meters with carefully prepared ammunition if you get lucky with a Chinese rifle. I understand that the new ones have cast chambers verses the older issues which were forged. No thanks, I have seen photos and the bolts and chambers are rough indeed with little mind for finish.

Just got back from the range today. First time I've taken out the m305 since I put it together last winter. I surprised myself. Maybe a lucky day. However it wasn't lol. Half way thru zeroing my bolt grenaded. I managed to find all the springs and pin. Regardless I was able to put it back together and finish off my day of fun. Horrible light today but still managed to get not too bad groups using surplus 147 gr. 7.62 off a bipod and Nikon 3-9 scope.
