I have a 2011 M14S rifle and I just purchased a 2012 M14S rifle. The 2012 version has a taller front site than the 2011. I haven't fired either. My question is, because of the short barrel, is it possible to zero the 2011 version with the short front site or do I need a replacement front site. If so where can I get a replacement front site?

You may find that a shorter front sight (not site!) is a plus. You won't have to wind the rear sight aperture pinion as much so that it sits up so high. This will give you better cheek contact on the stock and will allow slightly more accuracy from the rifle.

The shortie front sight is significantly taller and pretty much a have to have. They are also hard to get a hold of. There is a grenade launcher sight that is a replacement but its equally as rare
Do both rifles have the same barrel length??
If you've got a shorty M14 with a low front sight blade, I can just about guarantee you'll be shooting way high. I had a M305 professionally shortened to 18.75" barrel from 22", and tried to hit targets with the original sight.
The shorter front sight is intended for the longer barrel, while a tall front sight is needed for the short barrel rifle. On my rifle, the sight radius was changed when the barrel was shortened, which is why I needed a taller front sight.
I managed to find a tall front sight in Canada thanks to a CGN'er, but I do believe that Brownells has them and will ship them to Canada.
Of course, you could always mount a scope on the short rifle with the low sight and forget about the front sight.....
