I've done lots of searching on this subject and not found much info. I'm interested in getting into the semi-auto 308/7.62X51 market.

Any major difference I should know about between the shorty and the full length m14's? Is there a big different in accuracy? Any difference in parts or disassembly or anything? I can't imagine the differences are huge. I just like the look of the shorty a lot better.

They're both non-restricted... The Shorty is only slightly lighter... not that you'll feel the difference that much. You cannot mount a bayonet on the shorty version without modifications... Flash-hider is still welded on most of the time. Other than that it should be almost an identical twin to the regular version.

Personal preferance mostly. When I got my Krieger barrel they said they felt the short barrel was a bit more accurate due to less whip in the barrel. Personally I don't think you gain enough for the average shooter to see. I just think the short barrel looks a little less cumbersome. I do have both though, (thats really the only way to go)

I love the 22" regular/issued/traditional length barrel, but frankly, I wanted a shorty so I bought one.

A buddy of mine kept wanting it and made me an offer I could not refuse so I sold it. :(

Now I want another one to play with! They are great value and save you money from having to chop and customize it (gunsmith$$$ and flash hider $$ machining and $$ importing flash hider).

For the price Canada Ammo is charging, you also get that Norinco goofy coloured ammo that I was trash talking at the Petawawa M14 Clinic in April; only to witness all kinds of upper torso shots on figure 11 target at 500 yards. WITH iron sights no less. And these shorty rifles had Norinco iron sights which actually WORKED. :D

Was I ever impressed. So I bought one also.

In short... Don't buy ONE!

Buy TWO of them!

Cheers,
Barney

Thanks everyone. Really wish I didn't miss his sale. No more of the m14 ammo combo's left...
Le sigh..

But at least now I know shorty is the way for me

Both are great rifles. Only accuracy loss comparing apples to apples, would be a slightly shorter sight picture if using the aperture sights, and a slightly steeper trajectory and wind drift at distance(beyond 300 meters).

The 22" shouldn't be quite as loud, the shorty will handle better in and out of truck, in brush etc. The 22" is a copy of the Real McCoy, the shorty an after thought.

For the type of shooting most of these rifles get,.. I'd say pick whichever one you like the look of.;)

Oh yea,..... I don't think you can put a bayonet on the shorty. What's a Battle Rifle without a bayonet. Come on. I opened up a brand new, sealed USGI bayonet only a year younger than myself, packaged in Feb/1962. That's a little piece of cold war history, but I had to get it on the M-14.:)

shorty has a boynet lug that can be used... or at leaste mine does, it makes it so you can't drop the piston out without first unscrewing the gas system retaining nut (figure 8 dealy) so you can get enough clearance to get it past.

Hungry approved stickers now being printed ;)

FYI We will have a few more combos and ammo for sale next week. We are just catching up, inventory, etc. to make sure we do not over sell.

How do I find out when it goes back on sale? Just watch the website or can I get on a mailing list or can I preorder?! Need to buy shorty and ammo combo

Okay thanks LEP, I saw pictures without the bayonet lug. Are all the new shorties from all the dealers coming with lugs? I'm sure a guy posted one in another thread he just got and the F/H looked like the 2007 ones, lugless.

Done. Thanks, mate.

While I've got you here, I sent an email but never got a response regarding the ncstar Pistol & Rifle LED Flashlight. $39.99

Want to buy one asap. Any idea if or when more might come in? I would order that with my rifle/ammo combo. Been waiting for a while for it to come in stock

Actually I prefer the 18.5 to the 22's cause of the less barrel whip. Also these shorties make very interesting talking points in certain circle's :evil:
