I've read from many sources how to do this, including stickies and owner's guide. Why is this necessary? Is something going to go horribly wrong if you don't do this mod?

Essentially for any Norc or M1A, it's just an open hole that crud could get into...

Whether or not that matters to you is a different matter.

If I was planning on bedding the stock later, it sure would be handy to have the selector hole "plugged"....

There are lots of ways to "fill the gap" none of which are very difficult. The most expensive is to buy a fake FA selector sw, the cheapest is to do nothing....

The area that will likely need to be filled for a Chinese rifle would be the area relieved in the stock for the front of the disconnector transfer bar..... Nork rifles need that spot filled as the connector pin is flush with the receiver. So you could have troubles if you don't at least do the "Popsicle stick" mod....

Personally, I prefer to use a filler that binds permanently to the stock ie: devcon.

If I get ambitious, I may post some pics later of a USGI stock I am currently working on.....

I agree. It is easy to fill. My GI stock was in pretty rough shape.
I used regular "Steel Weld" epoxy from Crappy Tire ... used thin hobby styrene and liquid cement to create a "dam" ... when set, broke away then sanded stock flush.
Added reinforced fibreglass to anterior as per Gun Nutz sticky.
Painted with Duracoat in whatever colour you wish (I decided on Cadpat). Looks like new!

Where can someone get a faux selector lock?

I have the brownell one but it doesn't have the connector. If you want to original look SparrowHawkM14 makes one, not sure if they ship to Canada however and they are more expensive. It looks exactly like the picture you posted.

I'm bored :) and JB Weld is cheep, cheep, cheep!

Hence this operation:

Side dam building where FA fun parts / connector rod used to be....

Masking tape is your friend....

Then come back and smooth things over, especially if you use JB Quick (sp?) and you have 10 minutes to work with....

Another view of filling in the FA gaps....

And finally, the popsicle stick fix..... WITH a popsicle stick, no less....

Hope this helps the addiction!

Cheers,

Hungry AKA Tacticalteacher and Barney :)

Ah come on now, you cant say you are working on one and not show it. I'm working on one too but need to see yours :cool:

Geez.... I took pics but forgot to up-load them......

Here's what it looks like after filling the selector cut outs with fibreglass filler. I usually skim bed the stock so that there a nice tight fit between the stock and the action.

And here is a stock after its painted etc. This is not the same stock, but a different one I've done. This one I re-inforced the fore-end and bedded the stock the "old fashioned way".....

Sorry I didn't reply quicker Folklorestatus, vacation ...

- got the sling in Michigan, it's a Turner's all weather ... highly recommended. I assume you can order online.
- forward area filled in is as Tactical Teacher describes above ... not critical for function, but I made damn sure it didn't interfere.

Notsorichguy, really nice job on that finished rifle!
I skim bedded too with Tactical Teachers generous help, judging by the final result we have similar tastes. I have a silly grin every time I shoot the thing 'cause that muzzle brake and sling work so well!

Another reason to spend some time tinkering with the stock is to impress the hell out of your buddies at the club, when you really don't require all that much skill ... but then again, they are going to want to shoot your rifle all the time :p

Cheers!
