M14 tune up for noobs

Am I the only person on here that is satisfied with an out of the box M14?! I've had mine for a year now, and I have not done anything to it, and it shoots damned fine!

*Checks pants...* Yep, ####'s still there...

Unless I am wrong 168gr HPBT is NOT a hunting round. My understanding is that hunting is best carried out with lead or ballistic (plastic) tipped bullets. This ensures the most transfer of energy at shorter ranges and is more likely to result in a quick kill (more humane and less tracking required).

168gr HPBT was a solid match round and then was adopted more widely as a sniper round because military ammo cannot be lead tipped for Geneva Convention reasons, and because humans take less energy to kill than deer due to having less mass.

If I am wrong please correct me, I am pro hunting, but also pro humane kills for the animal.

The Sierra 168g HPBT is a matchking so a target round.
The Sierra 165g HPBT is a gameking so a hunting round.

Both shoot almost the same so you can use one for target work and swap to the other for hunting without rezeroing.

165g HPBT is my main hunting round in my bolt action and I have shot a number of animals with it.

Thanks for clearing that up, I didn't know there was a difference. I just checked Sierra's site and it turns out that the 168 was a FMJ. I'll just double up on the 165's and get comfortable with them. Good BC on these things, I guess it's because of the boat tail, .405 @ 2400 FPS.

I was just reading Jerry Teo's site about the M14s, he said trigger work will affect the accuracy. What is it going to cost to get a gas system shim, trigger polishing, stock tightening, and the welding done? Will this cost as much as the rifle itself?

I offer standard accurizing/match conditioning packages starting at 189.00 including tig unitizing of gas system. See my year end pricing thread in general dealer announcements. Pricing is good for all work booked by dec 31

All I have done to my Norc is put on a USGI Fibreglass stock, USGI spring and a Tartan Tactical spring guide. My groups shrank by half with the spring guide alone. All I need is a scope mount from Tartan Tactical as well and we are in 500-600m business.

here's what mine has:
-usgi fiberglass bedded at action, trigger group and mag area
-marstar op-rod
-wolf op-rod spring
-wolf hammer spring
-unitized
-scope mounted
-popsicle mod performed
-vietnam colouring performed (green handguard, brown stock)

all by yours truly
readthe stickeis but never attended a clinic :(

Ok thanks for the info guys, I'll probably get the trigger work, gas shimming, welding, etc all done around the same time I find a decent polymer stock. I got until next hunting season so not a huge rush. M14 doctor you're in Vancouver?

Would you mind PM'ing me your info. Sometime next year I'll get the work done, spring or summer most likely.

your not alone.
unless your match shooting i cant see a need for all the mods. i changed.....
-rear sight, mine was sh1t wouldn't adjust.
-gi flash suppresser, so i can shoot with a bayonet. (just to remind me).
-op rod guide to nm, i don't think you got to, but it does cycle smoother.
thats it, do you want a sniper platform? or shoot nm? are you capable of shooting that well? me personely i like all my stuff as close to army spec as possible. i figure if you can get a 3 to 4 inch group with no strays in the prone, sitting and standing at 200m your doin all right. considering 6" is all the weapon needs to to at 200m. then if you did go with all the "bells and whistles" you might be pretty good. train hard fight easy.

note - i leave out squating, i hated it at 18 i hate even more in my 40's.

Wholesale Sports, you have two in Edmonton. Check it out sometime, cheap prices but a lot of people complain about the service. I like their powder selection myself.
