So I’ve had this m14 for a few years now and I want to upgrade it to a shorty or a scout rifle similar to a Springfield scout. I’m wanting to get a different bolt that is USGI spec but doesn’t have to be original GI. I am also looking for a different gas cylinder to replace the ugly one on the Norinco and also I want an op rod. What is out there and where can I get it? I’ve seen all the above mentioned from 7.62mm firearms but I am not familiar with what parts can be shipped over the border.

For a scout scope mount what kind of mounting options are out there?? What would you recommend? Also what would be a good scout scope?

And I want a barrel 18.5” or as close as I can get to keeping it non restricted. Ive read about Krieger barrels but it seems they only pop p every once in a while or is there a distributor?

And the last thing I think I’m wanting for it is a muzzle break. What is a good one to get that won’t add too much length to the barrel but at the same time looks decent.

Hope you can point me in the right direction, prices don’t really matter to me as this will be an ongoing project and I want to use quality parts.

Thanks a bunch,
Mitchell

Hi Mitchell,

You should call 7,62mm to see what they can do for you.

As a scout mount, I'd get a Ultimak from Brownells. It's the lowest one, very sleek and nice.

Kreiger barrel are not available in standard contour. Depending on your intended purpose, you may want to keep it light. Then you could either get a riflesmith to cut your actual barrel or search for a Criterion/ LRB 18.5" barrel.

Good luck,
Phil

So what about a brake? whats a good one?? also what parts does the contour of the barrel affect? how does the ultimak mount??

I don't use muzzle brakes. People seems to use the one from SAI and SEI I believe. Dlask may make a nice one too.

A medium or standard contour barrel use all the exact same parts on a stock rifle. There's only some accessories like the Ultimak rail that won't fit medium profile.
The question is if you want to save .5/1 pound or .5 MOA (very gross estimate).

The Ultimak sits on top of the barrel and you bolt C-clamps under the barrel. Stiffening the barrel, it can increase accuracy a little.

I don't know what's your experience with the M14 but there's much to know. Enjoy all the stickies and use the search function.

I have the Springfield Armory M1A MUZZLE BRAKE/STABILIZER from Brownells.
That and a recoil pad took mine from a skull hammer to a smooth shooter. I also bought a UTG rail but it didn't fit the barrel profile very well. I had to build up the front saddles with JB weld to zero the scout scope.
