M14 - vented handguard....where can I get one ???

Ebay.

You will wonder why you bothered once you see it on your rifle. Not as cool (no pun intended) as it sounds.

so... does it work?
I'll do anything to improve my grouping (if it's cheap, changing the bolt is too much for me, I don't want to screw my rifle by bedding it at home either)

I'm a poor 2 MOA man :(

Nope... The vented guard won't improve things.

Rifle harmonics and your shooting skills decide that.

Correct me if I'm wrong,

Two short breaths, then sight, exhale slowly, and squeeze. Doing that constantly makes the world of difference on you group size!

I breathe okay I guess
I was shooting with a member of experience at my club, only thing he advocated was that I didn't take long enough between my shot to let the barrel cool down and I should go from 5 shots grouping to 3 shots grouping (to let the barrel cool down even more, saying that 5 shots group always had an odd shot out of the group)

I'm a pistol guy, and I just got into big calibers, this is surely the main reason of my insuccess.

Here's my setup:
-shooting at 100m
-scoped into a bushnell 4200 4-16x50AO set at 16x (so I don't need a spotting scope)
-sadlak aluminum mount
-gaz shimmed
-usgi stock not bedded
-desert warrior products cheek riser
-popsicle stick warfare fix performed

Hungry here: Only use MilSpec AeroSpace grade approved Contract-supplied popsicle sticks otherwise yer favorite appendage might fall off :D

oh and it's been cleaned and properly oiled/greased

I think your friend is correct here. Stick to 3 shot groups and let it cool down between groupings. 3 shot groups are all I ever attempt with my fully floated bolts. Attempting 4 or 5 shot groups will simply ruin your day. Case in point is my 270 Ruger ultra light, which will only group 2 at a time. Consistently produces 2 shots touching the 3rd 2" right. The light barrel is sensitive to heat. I'm thinking the M305 with all the barrel to stock contact points will have significant heat issues as well. Also, due to the high scope mounting I'm thinking a cheek rest/pad would significantly help my M305 groups which are not great yet, but getting better with each load refinement I try.

And look out for that Parallax demon.

I'm also TRYING to develop a load but god damn, any powder weight turned out to be same, all about 2 inch wide groupings

I've had a 3 shot .8 moa group with Remnigton premeir match ammo, but I'd bet that was luck cause my reloads are the same configuration... 168gr HPBT sitting on H4895

I've tried from 41 to 42.5 grain of powder (with .5 gr increase every new load) then I stopped cuz the wind was getting VERY strong.

try the palma match 155gr. They actually buck the wind better then the 168gr and they were designed for the m14/m1a. I've been shooting them out of my SA SuperMatch 1/10 with 43.5 grains of ....wait for it 4350. and yes I've been getting consistent 1/2 groups.:jerkit:

any source for em palma bullets around? My local dealer is a Speer distributor only (for rifle bullets)

if you are shooting with a scope it will actually make things worse. It allows the heat to escape directly up which interferes with your optics and you get barrel mirage. The standard handguard has the heat / air moving out the sides a bit, which while it doesn't look like much means everything.

any wholesale sports or alberta tactical (they ship). The palma bullets are a great bullet and I find they fly better and hitting 1000 yards is much easier then with a 168gr. must be a better bullet design.:dancingbanana:

The whole process requires that you try different powders, primers, bullets and casings. I usually skip the casings and primers part. It's a time consuming tedious process, but well worth the effort once you discover the secret formula. I'm getting close but unfortunately it's pointing towards a bullet I don't care for (150gr Nosler ballistic tips). Will be switching from 150gr to 165gr bullets for the next set of experiments. The 165 is a do it all bullet in my 300WM, trajectory of a 150, energy of a 180, so maybe I'll have some success going that direction.

yes yes, I understand how to develop a load...

Anyway looks like I will have to start over if I do change bullet
I'll have some 168gr for sale soon it seems ;)

PM Me regarding the bullets, I'm in the same boat. Experiment, Experiment, Experiment. Maybe trade for some 150's.

Don't get discouraged. Took me two years to develope a 300WM load that works with my rifle. It was worth every minute.

AND, when someone volunteers this type of info.... try it! I Know I will.

155gr, 43.5 grains, 4350, consistent 1/2 groups

As always use caution and work up!!!!!!

It's all-online. I was suspicious about 4350 as well. Seems to be a magnum powder but there are loads for 165+ in 308. I'm re-thinking giving my 2 tins of 4350 away now.

whats the popsicle stick for, haven't been to hungrey's course?

I havent assisted either, just read it aroudn here

When going to USGI stock, there's an area where the little piece that holds the Op-rod spring guide can eject, thus the spring guide can fall off

Where do you get it?
I use Hodgdon's online data and it doesn't show up
