I just purchased a Boyds walnut stock for my M14 and I am wondering why most of the handguards are either plastic or fiberglass, vented and non vented.
Does anyone know who sells the walnut handguard in Canada?

Are there pros and cons of having a walnut handguard, as almost every M14/M1A I've seen has a fiberglass handguard.

I did read the original M14's came with a wooden handguard but they were replaced due to them catching fire/ burning when it was used on auto. I would imagine the fiberglass ones allow the barrel to cool better than the walnut one.

Thanks !

Did get a boyd walnut handguard w/ one of my m14 unfinished stocks... ...their production seems somewhat sporadic though.

I was able to get the set about a year ago when they had them onsale. $98.00 for the finished set. You could probably give them a call and they may be able to get one close to your wood tone. No fires yet....

I posted on this topic a short while ago. I received an e-mail confirmation, in response to a similar inquiry, that Boyd's no longer produce a wood handguard for the M1A, only the stock. Personally, I like the look of a painted brown plastic or fibreglass hanguard with their oiled walnut stock.

Thanks for the feedback. It seems that the only place at this time that has the walnut hand guard in-stock is Fulton Armory...... they don't ship to internationally either.

I guess I can paint my current black handguard brown to match the stock or order a vented brown fiberglass handguard.

I will make my decision when my stock arrives .
