M14 with 18.5" barrel

Here is my M14 with the 18.5 inch barrel, Dlask flashhider, Troy MCS chassis, Vltor Emod buttstock, Magpul MIAD grip, Harris Bipod and Millet TRS-1 4-16x 50mm Scope. Had the barrel shortened by Dlask which I must say they did an excellent job.

Sorry but I didn't have any pics of just the M14 by itself.

Whaaaat? Why do you say this?

I don't say it, the Firearms Act does. 18.5" is the "safe" length commonly used to ensure a prohibited firearm does not result from chopping a barrel.

The Criminal Code defines the following firearms as prohibited:

* rifles and shotguns that have been altered so that their barrel length is less than 457 mm (about 18 inches) or their overall length is less than 660 mm (about 26 inches);

You have way to much money and time on your hands.

Yes, the original M14 flashider can be reused on a shorty ...
NO, don't ask Dlask to do this for you!!!!

The 14 Flashiders, original and reproductions, are sometimes VERRRRRY hard.
Harder than your average 1/2x28 TPI Tap.
Be aware of this before you start, or you could be spending more for the taps than you would for a GRFS and a AR 15 Flashider.

I built a custom/one off clamp on front sight tower for this application, and YHM has another M-14 Clamp on front sight base that might work with a bit of boring out to fit the barrel OD @ 18.5".

PS: I don't really care about flash suppression on my 14 builds, or achieving any kind of "Tacticool" fashion statement,
but I do I have a DLASK shorty comp on my 14, and it REALLY makes a difference on fast follow shots. Cuts the recoil down to about the same as an SKS. A comp on a shorty 14 [ or any other shorty FULL powered 7.62 NATO rifle ]makes sense ...

I don't know anything about not getting anybody in particular to do the work for you...Joe might not want to do this work but I would definitely trust him to do it and do it well, just in case there is any confusion about that!

Anyway here is the full explanation of how to do it. I figured this out a while ago and don't use anything else now, this method is CHEAP and coincidentally kicks ass!

That's funny, because of the half-dozen I've done, I've been able to drill every one of them with Canadian Tire drill bits and a cordless drill...go figure!

Of course that same set of drill bits had no trouble with the chrome barrels, which are supposed to be very hard as well. So I don't know what to think!

Not with the original barrel you will need to replace the barrel as there is very little material to machine in the indexing splines on the shortened stock barrel .OK like no material .
If you are set on using the Stock front sight assembly you will have to with a aftermarket unit that is 18.5 inches this will allow you to use the standard front sight .Be also aware that the Chamber on the new barrel needs to have the finishing reamer run thru it as the barrels chambers are 10 tho + shorter than required

You can use the Smith AR Vortex and bore it out for .308.

Interesting. Can't be much material for it to screw onto though.

There is enough material the when using the metric thread to use the SEI DC Vortex .The difference is the thread pitch this allows you to use the DC Vortex .I have done about 8 conversions to the 18.5 barrel however the best barrels so far are USGI barrels as the OD dimensions are very good the Norinco barrels have issues with OD dimensions less than the USGI by about 5-10 thou under,You can still mount the SEI DC Vortex.
