For years I took my M14 to deer camp as a back up gun. So is it true that they are now Prohib like a L1A1? Would it be best to part it out or sell it whole whole if you can't use the darn thing.

Yes, the TRW M14 is considered a prohibited firearm due to being converted from fully automatic fire. If you have been continuous legal possession of this firearm you are grandfathered under section 12(3) of the Firearms Act and can sell it to anyone in the same license class (this would be indicated on the back of your PAL). If you are not grandfathered you would have to surrender the receiver but could still sell the rest as a parts kit.
 
Or, if you really like the gun, you could buy a Norc M305 and mount all your TRW parts on the Norc receiver. You would have little trouble selling the parts, especially if they are new, off of your Norc to recover the costs of a new receiver so you can still shoot it.

Those TRW parts have a great deal of value at the moment. If you decide to sell the parts have them assessed carefully so you don't get ripped off. Just my .$02 worth.
 
Grab a Norinco or Polytech and have the GI parts assembled on to the new receiver (and take it hunting again), assuming the old receiver is registered, hang on to it to keep your 12.3 - if not turn the stripped receiver in to the local PD for destruction, or cut it in half with a torch and keep it as a souvenir of the good old days. If you don't want buy a new gun, you can strip the parts off the GI gun and sell for a pretty good price, we can't bring GI parts in from the US anymore, so they're not getting cheaper (especially TRW).
 
Im drawing the analogy that you can own one variant but not its seeming clone, same calibre same operation but one you can throw in the vault never to shoot again and one you can throw in your rifle rack in your vehicle and cruise till the tires fall off.......

but can't you get a GMC 4x4 and/or a Chevy 4x4?

Are you dense?

Chevy and GMC trucks are identical other than minor body work differences. In some cases they will even end up at the lot with wrong badging on them.

What is being said is that it would be like restricting Canadians to only own the Chevy truck, because the Denali option is too good for Canadians and therefore all GMC trucks are prohibited in Canada.

nope- she's a 12(3) converted auto - or at least mine are- part it out, get a fair price, and then you have to turn the receiver in for destruction- there is NO mechanism for adding prohibs to the current list- remember the registration system, if you can call it that, was made up by a bunch of monkeys who didn't know squat about firearms- and we had to register what we had according to what we knew- therefore, you are going to get some "flaws" in catagories, and a bunch of other things- and pointing them out is going to lose you your rifle-i personally know of at least 1 m1a that's registered as an m1-308 garand- my 45 acp remmy is listed as a colt, probably a few out there that list the m14 as an m1(4)- see what i mean- and don't get me started on duplicate serial numbers for milsurps

thanks for your input, i am not dense, you can buy both trucks, you are not restricted in any way from owning either so the comparison is moot....

mini 14 to AR 15 or Swiss Arms Black Special to AR 15 that makes sense....

I guess the concept of a hypothetical situation eludes you, but clearly you understand the original meaning.
 
I do these conversions for guys quite frequently.

DON"T SELL HER !!

like others have stated, buy a norinco m14s/m305 and have a qualified m14 gunsmith swap all your precious TRW parts to the Non restricted norinco forged receiver. If you need details or help with this service, email me, I work on these rifles on a daily basis ;)
 
Just my 2 cents, but dont do a damn thing, with the TRW lock it up, and buy an nork for hunting, i would challege the system with there mistake, you have done all your legally required they know you have it. and get a lawyer thats know britsh common law and beat them at there game

Does that reg cert have an expiry date? If the gun has been continuously registered you might be able to apply for 12(3) status.
