I had my latest shorty build out last Sunday, for initial testing and sighting in. Also had a 22" barreled 14 out for comparison ... of course there is NO comparison in balance, handling and convenience between the racier, chopped and channelled shorties and the 22" stockers. These shorties, as exemplified by the ones in the pictures above, are the way the M-14 SHOULD be built.
We are doing more M-14 shorties up at this week's Wet Coast M-14 group grope, but I don't think we will be anywhere near as organised and efficient as the production line set up by you "amateurs". Don't know how many will be there, but we'll try to beat the record you have set of FIVE shorties in 12 hours [ did you include beer breaks and a barbecue in your amazing event?? ]
At the range session, I tried the shorty in both a GI Glass stock and the folder, and still like the folder the best. The pistol grip really does make a big difference in control for faster shooting [ you can use a "weaver dynamic tension" type of hold, pulling back on the forend, pushing frwrd on the pistol grip ].
I'll get some pics of my last folder build. It is camo, built on a GI Fiberglass stock. I'll be at the Chilliwack and the Kamloops gunshows, if any one wants to feel the difference these shorties and folders have.
My shorty does not [ yet ] have a muzzle brake or flashider on it. I notice you'all went with Vortex/Phantom AR-15 style F/Hiders, probably in the original 1/2" x 28 TPI?? These are the best M-14 shorty f/h design I've found [ if you remember to bore out the ID to 30 cal instead of leaving them @ .223 cal ... you "amateurs" DID remember that trivial little part, right? ].

However,
after several of these shorties, I realised that I personally don't care much about actual flash suppression. BUT, the look cool factor is definitely better with SOMETHING hangin off the muzzle. So what's a boy to do??
I am now using the shorter DLASK 3 hole shorty .30 Cal muzzle brakes [ yeah, Dlask IS a professional, and he remembered to bore them out to .30 Cal before he sold them to me ]. These are same size and profile [ maybe slightly fatter ] as the F/hiders you'all used, but I am looking forward to much improved muzzle control and shorter times on splits and tighter doubles.
If you are going to optimise the 14 for CQB, then a muzzle brake gets more Kool Aid Bonus Points than flash reduction. Fortunately, if you went with standard AR 1/2 X 28 TPI threads at the muzzle, you will be able to swap back and forth [ as the tactical role demands .... it might be dark in the mall when you need to clear it, and a F/H might be absolutely necessary then ... right??]
My shorty gave me about 3" @ 100 yds, with iron sights, 7.62 NATO BALL ammo, off of a rough bench rest, in drizzle and dim light. But more important, with the shorty, I can keep ALL my shots on the 200 Yd Ram ... OFFHAND.
And once I get that muzzle brake installed, I'm hoping I can do the same as fast as I can aim and pull the trigger,
Now won't that be sumthin'?
