Pretty darn close, usually the 7.62 X 51 or 39 come out closer to .31? if they are military surplus rounds.

308 will still work in place of 7.62 and vice versa if you are handloading.

I'm pretty sure that you couldn't chamber the 7.62X39 into a 7.62X51 and make it work, but there is probably some idiot out there to prove me wrong...
 
no the 7.62X39 is not a .308, the base of the case is alot smaller, about .025 thou smaller, you would need a new barrel, & bolt, the mag might work

but nork M305 chambered in 7.62X39 would be fun to play with

"...would be fun to play with..." Yep. There'd be no felt recoil at all. Mag would be too long though.
