I'm posting for a friend of mine who lacks internet access... Anyway, he just got his M14 the other day and I went over to take a look at it. To make a long story short, we disassembled/cleaned/reassembled the gun and now the action will no longer fit properly into the stock.

The receiver area gets stuck about 5mm up from being flush with the stock at the rear, and it's noticeably tilted to the right when looking down the gun from the back. It can be forced in but this results in the op rod rubbing pretty hard into the stock and a large gap between the op rod and the handguard.

Now we both noticed that taking the stock off the first time was very difficult (as was removing the gas nut, much more so than it was on my own M14). Is it possible we could have bent the stock or action somehow? What do you guys suggest?

They can be a little tricky to reassemble sometimes. It sounds like the trigger group is not engaging the receiver lugs at the same time so one is in and one is out.

There are likely two problems. The steel surfaces are rough and naturally are going to be binding. The more obvious problem is getting the grooves on the trigger guard to engage in the bottom of the receiver before the trigger guard lugs engage. Try dry fitting outside the wood to see what I mean. But don't force it. That resistence is obvious that you are doing something wrong. It was there once, you just need to find the sweet spot to put things back in place.

It got stuck before I had even put the trigger group in. Only with a lot of pressure could I get the action seated and the trigger group in and locked down. However even with that all in place and the gun assembled the oprod now binds on the wood... something is out of whack as it fit and functioned fine before dissassembly. I even took it all apart and reassembled twice just to doublecheck; and no luck.

Kind of puts me a position, going over to my friend's place to show him general disassembly/cleaning etc on the M14 and then "breaking" his new gun.

Did you use a gas block wrench when you took off the gas plug? If not, you may have twisted the gas block hence the tilting of the action to the right, it happened to a friend of mine.

check for a significantly loose oprod guide..... the ring fixture attached to the barrel that the forward end of the oprod travels through. If this is loose and has moved and stuck to one side..... this will cause a change in oprod travel angle and WILL bind to the stock. The stock may also be binding on this guide as it is closing. I highkly doubt your gas assembly has moved any significant amount as suggested above.... i would look past this and check oprod guide and alignment.... if you think this might be an issue..... p.m. me, I'll walk you through it

Just got a call from the friend, I left my own M14 there for testing purposes and he's narrowed it down to the stock (his action fits fine in my stock, but not vice versa).

Unfortunately no more updates until I can make it over there tomorrow night and see. Any further suggestions are welcome though :)

a lot of these stocks are really tight, and should be- remember, if you dremel, go real easy as the wood is very soft and what you take off can't be put back- one of the reasons the original m14s( as in plural not the rinco model) went to a fiberglas stock was the swelling of the wood under humid conditions, so much that it wouldn't work- would that we had dremels in the field back then

Well I went over tonight and got a couple pics... Neither of us could see anything off except that the right receiver piece that fits into the stock looked just slightly tighter than the left.

Where it starts to bind (with trigger group not insterted):

just from looking at the pic i can see that there is WAY too much space above the oprod.... between it and the handguard. I'm gonna bet 5.00 that the oprod guide is sitting off to the left........ or maybe your stock band is somehow not sitting true..... can you take the action out of the stock and get a good pic of your oprod guide area

Okay, I am going to jump in here and say that since it worked before and now doesn't that somehow you must have moved the stock liner just enough that the action will not sit flush like it should . I have ran into this with real USGI M14 stocks .
I would suggest that you locate a stock liner tool loosen the 2 screws where the liner will move a little but not completely take the screws out, then install your action fully ,it shoulld seat and ajust the liner because now it has play due to the screws being loosened . Install the trigger group, and lastly tighten the liner screws .
I know that SARCO and I believe Numerich (Gunparts corp) sells the stock liner tool . The one I have is homemade and bought with some parts years ago , it is ugly but works !
In a pinch you can take 2 roll pins that fit the holes and some square stock and use a crescent wrench to loosen the screws .
Let us know what you find on the rifle ?
Hope this helps !
Mike

Recheck the little pin that holds in your spring guide at the front of the reciever. On the norcs it should be flush with the reviever and not stick out!!! Those that replace thier norc stocks with U.S. stocks quickly realize that they need to put a filler in the stock to keep that little pin in place.
