After I buy a few more pistols I am looking to buy either a M14S or CZ858. I don`t want to buy both so only one will be purchased. Just wondering what the public feeling is on these two because I am finding it hard to choose, thanks

Apples and oranges, my friend.
I suggest you try and give both a whirl before plunking down the dinero.
I was sceptical about both...but after putting a few rounds down range I ended up buying BOTH of them...
Very different animals...both have their niche...and both are quite practical being non-restricted.

Apparently CZ858s are in high demand. I've been waiting for mine from wolverine for six months.
A little off topic, but there seem to be a few floating aroung at the moment...
You might want to give Gunnar at ARMCO a call...

Im not sure if Millarm has em still . but Bashaw sportts in Bashaw ,go figure has them i was there yesterday

I am fortnate to have Cz858 and a M14 . and whenever i go to the range i always take both .
They are both suprizingly accurate(-4inch group@100yds) although the M14 does have a slight edge ,but otherwise i have a job choosing between the 2 .oh except ammo for the CZ is still cheaper .

Middle target is M14 and SKS to left

Everybody should have a VZ58 or 858, M305 and SKSs. They are fun and cheap to shoot. You wouldn't lose much even you don't like them anymore. They all have very good resale value.

+1.
My other favourite (relative) low dollar unit is my Yugo SKS...
All of them represent excellent value for money and if you don't keep them...
(they're part of my permanent battery), they hold their value well!

i have a 858 and a 305, personally i like the cz better, i just love the bananna mag and looks of it and shooting it, the 305 yea its a bigger cartridge and more versitile but for a fun gun i take the cz 858, also a huge amount in weight between the 2, the 305 is like a tank. the cz just suits me better i guess, but i wont put down the 305 its still a great gun, you cant go wrong with either of them.

I have an SKS, VZ58, and M14.

If you're cheap, just the SKS will do fine. I find the barrel on the 858 very funny looking. But then I've got a 16" AR and I think it looks fine; to each his own

The M14 does need a stock if your going to get serious. The VZ858 will need nothing. Ammo is pretty cheap for both.

I'd go M14 - best bang for your buck. These suckers are going for a lot of money accross the boarder, but then again so is the VZ2000.

Shucks, I don't know.

On the other hand the M14s are drying up. It would seem that the 858 is going to be offered for some time. You're going to want all of them so buy the M14 first, then the 858, and then the SKS to kick around and never clean.

VZ858 is great, cheap ammo, easy to clean, price is ok. SKS is cheap, ammo cheap, relatively easy to clean. M14 great, full power, alot of rifle for the money, only drawback is ammo is twice the price of 7.62x39. They are all great rifles.

Get one VZ858 - $680 + tax
OR..........
one M14 $500 and one SKS $160 for $660 + tax

If I had a choice and only $700 to spend, I'd get a SKS and M14 now. That way you have the best of both worlds - SKS cheap ammo - M14 full power 7.62x51 battle rifle. Pick up a VZ858 later.

I have one of each and am VERY HAPPY with each one. I think you will be also. Perhaps you can go to your local range and find someone who will share theirs with you for a test fire and this may also help you in the decision. Hmmmmm.....actually you'll end up wanting one of each probably.

hori- If you're in the edmonton area, I will let you try my m14 and my 858. I like both the guns. For hunting, i like the m14, but the 858 is much lighter, but the 7.62x39 is rather anemic compared to 7.62 nato

I'm lucky enough to own both. but if I was forced to choose, I'd go M305 (M14s). mine has been plenty accurate and reliable, that is bone stock aswell. I found the action smoothed up quite nicely after 100 rnds or so, though the front sight is still a tiny bit tanted to one side. does it bother me? not in the slightest. sighted in and ran with it! both are solid investments.

cheers,
BCtrigger

A little off topic but that pic looks like Emille's range north of the deer. I love that range.

I would second buying from Bashaw sports if you go with the 858. Pud's a great guy to deal with and he'll back up what he sells.
