Don't be swayed by us, get what you'll enjoy the most. Both guns have their merits. The SKS is light, compact, cheap and fires inexpensive ammo. Maybe this is more important to you than the reasons I chose an M14s?
i made a thread with these exact 2 options about a month n a bit ago .. choice was tough for me too .. i was chosing between the m14 and an SKS carbine ..
i ended up getting both.. ditching a shotgun and a bolt action that i never used.. and to tell you the truth.. i love them both.. the sks is so compact and light and a pleasure to shoot.. and the M14 is.. well.. an M14.. enough said
Sorry but for me its the SKS. While not having the power&accuracy of the M14, the SKS is extremely durable and reliable, compact and ammo is inexpensive. And very cool russian look.
nothing wrong with the SKS for big game hunting.. its my new deer and goat rifle .. dont tend to take shots at more than 100m in the bush here so it works nice
I say sks but then again I'm bias because I can't seem to afford an M14 yet. But for the best bang for the buck is sks. Its cheap ($199.50 lever arms russin refurb) and ammo-a-plenty($180 a case)
I hate to say that I voted SKS. Cheap ammo, cheap rifle and low expectations. I had an M14S and it shot like gargabe. Sure it's an example of 1, but it's the only one I've shot. Had it shot better I'd have said M14 despite the pricier ammo.
