M14S question

I have a question, its probably a dumb newbie question but here goes. When I put a mag into my M14 the little tab that locks the bolt open engages so when I pull the bolt back to load the bolt stays open, what am I doing wrong? I'm at home so I dont actually have any rounds in the mag, could that be the problem? I also tried with safety on/off and there's no difference

Sorry if i'm an idoit and this has been posted a million times, I did afew searchs but got nothing back.

Most semi-autos have this feature, it holds the bolt open after the last round is fired!! If the mag was loaded, it would chamber a round.....

Hey, don't worry about it...my dad has guns he's owned for longer than I've been alive...and that confused him too - and not on an M14 but on an old remington bolt gun!

"Now why won't this close?"

"Follower blocks the bolt, dad!"

"Oh...what? Follow, what?"

But you do not want to mess with the guy with that old bolt gun in his hands, he will put holes in you!
