Sorry, if this has been previously posted.

Is anyone in Canada doing the conversion on M14s to 300WSM???

Save your money !! Reload with various weights of .30 cal bullets and stick with the .308. If you really must have said .30 WSM, then buy an M70 in that caliber. The gunsmithing required would guarantee that you will lose lots of the money sank into this project.

Just trying to save you hard earned after tax dollars.

Do not use the Hornady Lite Magnum ammo in your M14 as the propellant is NOT suitable for the rifle due to higher port pressures at the gas piston . If you want to break parts by all means use the ammo

The M-14 design is inherently sensitive to pressure changges.

The powder/bullet weight balance in an M-14 is optimised for the correct port pressure required to operate the op rod with exactly the correct amount of enthusiasm to reliably recipricate the reciprocating mass.

And,
not too much powder, too slow a powder, or too different a bullet weight or the balance may cause the recipricating mass to recipricate too quickly, and beat the snot out of your receiver.

While I've never personally bothered with one, there are adjustable gas plugs available for the M-14, to bleed off excess gas. These are mostly used by 1000 yard shooters, who require a heavier bullet than the recommended 168 Gr maximum.

If you do get a barrel chambered in .300 WSM, you might also be looking at feeding issues as the mags and feed lips might need to be tweaked.

Personally, if I wanted to change the ballistic profile of an M-14, I'd be more inclined to look at .243 Win or .358 Win.

Or else I'd be looking at an AR 10, which has a wider tolerance to pressure, and probably would be a better starting point.

Yes, as soon as the non-semi amunition was mentioned I thought of that as well. Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

Safety should be the only limit with the gas system off. Your M-14 Would act like a bolt gun once the gas system is off.

Have you guys ever run a semi with the gas system turned off?

It's not as much fun as it sounds.

You lose alot of camming power that way...

Ok, I have no idea what "camming" means when talking about guns. Could you explain please.

I have fired a few rounds with out the gas system, but I don't usually do it. That's why I bought an M-14!!

I also fire my M-14 using a chamber adapter and .32 ACP rounds... that's not fun either ... but it doesn't mess up the grouse as much as a .308 :)

Nic

I need to know what camming is as well?

This will be the last off topic post I make in this thread...sorry.

Ok, I probably should have explained what I want to do first. I want to go sheep hunting this fall, I love the M14, I would own six if it was practical. When I look at rifles that are chambered for amunition that hunters feel would make a good kill shot at 400 yards in the windy mountains, they look to dainty(nice). I would rather spend a lot of money on a great scope and mount for the M14 than buy most of the rifles that I seen. If anyone has any advice I am intrested.

Best advice yet.............;)

It is not worth the $$$$$$ or effort to convert...................

Well Here's what I'm wondering..... Being in a Town with NO GOOD GUN SHOPS my ammunition selection is Limited! That means I pay MORE for .308 ammo with lighter bullets! Would one of those gas port adjustment dealies work for firing High Pressure .308? Can you switch back and forth on the fly? (ie. can I fire a mag of 180grn and then a mag of 145grn?)

"...chambering reamer..." That won't make the chamber shorter.
"...sheep hunting..." The .308 will kill any sheep in North America. You need to work up a load that is accurate enough at your 400 yards. Think 165 or 175 grain hunting bullets and a good scope. Said scope does not have to be a great big high magnification SOB either. 2.5X to 8X will do nicely without being excessively heavy.

I gave up on the idea of the conversion when I found out how much could be done with the 308. Now if I could get some more information on the adjustable gas ports, I would have more to think about.
