Okay I give up. I tried searching for a comprehensive thread on their differences, but I cannot find one. I have read that they are different, but where/how? Again, I apologize if this question has been answerred before, but I cannot find it.
 
The latest Norinco m14's are labeled m14s. Some of the earlier ones were m305 and some were simply m14. I believe there were other model names as well (m14 sporter?), yet they were all identical. Its wise they label them something other than m14, as a true m14 is capable of select fire and would be restricted or prohibited.

My Polytech M14S, no it's NOT selective fire, never was....has an actual bayonet lug. Slotted flash suppressor like original.
According to some sources, other than the bolt metallurgy, it was the closest to an actual US made, M14 at the time, while still only a semi auto. (1985ish) Including parkerizing, mil spec scope mounting point, etc....cheesy wood cheap stock though, not walnut, something softer than...

M305s came from Norinco factory, different finish at one point, no bayonet lug, different flash eliminator, etc...I do not have one myself, my closest speculation.

If there is a new Norinco M14S, this is news to me.
 
The letter "S" on my 2007 was clearly added as an afterthought, its in a different script and size, depth and not aligned perfectly. I'm thinking someone didn't want them to say m14 and needed to distinguish them.
 
it's not defined as to what if any the difference is - my circa 1990 (the one with that awful bench grind on the scope mount has no model designation whatsover- simply made in proc, serial number and the nork star-but the trigger group is the same as on my isrealis- just the lug and associated is missing, and the flashider has been bastardized

I have a couple of polytech's that have no markings at all except for the serial number. They are registered as polytech's because I bought them as polytech's. No m14/m305 markings....no made in china....nothing.
 
"Different" aka Lee Emmerson has an online reference book on the US M14 rifle. He has an entertaining series of chapters on the Chinese connection, and has answers for this M14S vs M305 debate.

BTW, the prettiest and least military "M14" I ever saw was a polished and blued rifle with a big Norinco/Star-Trek wheel logo where the scope lug normally fits. It had a USGI stock and was as shiney as a nice sporting rifle.
