Today I bought one of the M1886 Extra Lights that Epps is selling. I prefer the M1886 Short Rifle; shoulda bought one when Prophet River had them in stock, or Epps for that matter.

But no matter, the Model 1886 Winchester is arguably the finest lever action ever built; right there with the Model 1895 Winchester.

FWIW, this is my fourth .45-70. I've got 2 of the pre-Rem Marlin M1895s, along with a No.4 Remington Rolling Block.

Lets not get crazy.

Iam sure your gun is nice, and you like it.But to make that statement,oh my.

^ No I was correct; the M1886 was the finest lever ever built (until the M1895). Winchesters other 2 excellent lever guns, the M1892 & M71 are just modified versions of the M1886.

And the mighty M1895, chambered in high pressure smokeless cartridges is still unsurpassed by modern lever guns.

These are facts.

The 86 was a fine lever and an excellent design and the 92 is just a baby 86. However the 1895 was not a great design, well executed manufacture but not a great lever design. Problems exist when used with those high pressure smokeless loads, e.g., locking lug setback over continued shooting leading to excessive headspace especially in the .30/06 chambering. This is a documented fact. As far as design and metallurgy go the 1899 Savage was superior to them all and years ahead of its time and I am a Winchester nut myself.

Congrats on that extra light. That is a beautiful rifle for sure. I had one a while back but had to part with it to get the funds to buy an old Winchester.

Kind of a 45-70 junkie aren't you...:)

Do you hunt with them?..or are you like most of us just shoot them for the the he11 of it?..

I sold a stainless Guide Gun about a year ago and just grabbed another one in blue 'cuz the price was right...can't hurt to have at least one 45-70 around.

How's the steel butt plate on the Extra Light work with heavy loads?
They must be a bit lighter than the average Marlin also.

My 1886 short rifle is far smoother and alot nicer gun than any either of my marlin 45/70's. Very accurate with a variety of cast bullet loads. Didn't like the rebounding hammer as you get the occasional miss fire so I got rid of that and never had any more trouble. The only thing I like better about the Marlin is you can drop in a Wild West trigger and have a really crisp trigger.
The curved butt plate is fine when shooting offhand but somewhat misserable when shooting off the bench with stiff loads

Rembo, what's not to like about the .45-70? :)

Basically, it's all about wanting one of those excellent Miroku M1886 repros. I obviously ddin't need another .45-70...

Btw, I have shot 1 black bear with my M1895 guide gun, but I've shot a lot more paper. :D

I like the 1886 is better than the 1895. The magazine, in my opinion only, make the 95 a little more unhandy to carry.
The 1886 is the best of all the levers
