M1894 Krag Jørgensen rifle question

I have one of the above, sn 17,6xx. It has 1911 stamped on the top of the receiver. What is the function of the little lever on the left side, at the back of the receiver. When flipped up, the is an "S" facing out. When flipped down, the is "AA" facing out. The numbers on the parts seem to be matching. It is full wood, but BUT, the stock has been broken at the wrist and there is a good "farmer" repair. It is solid though.

the lever is a magazine cut off.

it will either permit rounds to load from the krags magazine, or block the mag so the rifle is a single loader.
