Hi Fellas,

I picked this rifle up at Epps a while back. I asked if they had any good deals on a 30/06. They showed me this, I paid $275 with the scope (Bushnell Banner). The bore was marked 'excellent", which it is.
I didn't think too much about it, just took it home.

Last night I had a good look at it. It appears to have a custom barrel (in the pic you can see the bluing is different from the receiver.) Also, the trigger appears to be aftermarket, and it has a very light pull. Somebody's initials are engraved into the floorplate. Somebody loved this baby.

Can anyone tell me anything about it ?

Thanks.

Nice .... Would be tempted to rechamber it for 3ooH&H as the action is plenty long and it's a custom gun anyways so it won't hurt the value. How long is the bbl?

Another floorplate should be easy to find is you wanted to lose the initials. :)

Looks like a custom barrel. There may be markings under the barrel, and the trigger group might have a name on it as well.

Is that a Bishop stock?

I had a Pattern 17 .30-06 sporter in a Bishop wood stock.

Shot really well, but man it was a heavy rifle.

Somebody definitely did a nice job. That floor plate has been either cut a welded or bent straight. The original rifle has a belly mag. Its the same plate but the original has a step in front of the magazine plate. It was common on rifles that were sporterized. Other than that it's hard to tell much about it, but it's a nice job as opposed to a lot of bubba'd 1917's out there. I have an old 1917 sporter that I want to convert to 300H&H, just trying to find someone to do the work.

The pinkish coloured action is suggestive of an Eddystone action, the hardest and least desirable action of the three makers, Winchester and Remington being the other two... Or just a lousy bluing job... If it is an Eddystone I believe it is best left as a 30-06. It could also be the original barrel with a front sight added. With no rear sight and that front ramp sight I suspect it may have had a receiver peep sight at one time... Does it appear to have any inletting or holes drilled for a receiver sight on the right side just ahead of the closed bolt handle?

That does look a lot like a Bishop stock on yours. Had one years back in .458 on a Remington action
with a Fajen stock that weighed in at 11+ lbs. with a 1.5x4.5 Bushnell Scope Chief on 'er.
A real beast to go bush crawling with, but it sure shot good.:)

That would be cool. I wonder though if the magazine box is long enough? New bottom metal might drive costs up sharply?

Methinks you got a great rifle there.
Personally I'd leave it as it is in the 30/06 caliber and enjoy it.

A Pattern 13 (303) floor plate should fit as well if you want to replace that one, or even easier is to just get that one re engraved over the initials. A jewler would probably have more info.

The floor plate of the mag comes out and the spring detaches easy so you can bring that piece into a shop with you. ;)

The trigger is the standard military one by the looks of it.

Every P17 I have handled had a grooved trigger, both full wood and sporters.

Thanks. I just couldnt imagine that trigger being stock, but I stand corrected.

In spite of being cranked out in epic numbers for a short period of time they put a lot of love into that design.

IMHO it is the best of the Enfield variants. IIRC Remington started making them as hunting rifles as the Model 30 during peacetime.

Nice gun, mine looks almost identical. It was sporterized, custom barrel, custom bedded, awesome trigger and balance. I don't notice it being to heavy, but my first bush gun was a M14 clone.

How do you tell who made the action?
